زن، زندگی، آزادی
Zan. Zendegi. Azadi.
Woman. Life. Freedom.

These are not just words — they are a cry for dignity. A call for justice. A revolution echoing through generations of silenced voices.

On 14 June, we open the doors at Artful Yoga Gallery for a powerful exhibition by Nima Jamishi , honouring the courageous women and allies who spoke out against oppression and paid with their lives. Voices like Mahsa Amini, Nika Shakarami, and others whose stories still reverberate through the streets of Iran and beyond.

This exhibition is a homage — a visual and emotional tribute — to those who dared to speak, to live freely, and to be seen. Their fight is not over. Their voices must continue to be heard.

What It Was Like to Have 3 Years of Running My Own Business

How can I define this journey? Hmmm – injurious yet strengthening.

For the first six months of acquiring the business, I was still working as a lead environmental specialist managing two power stations. I worked there during the day and came into the studio in the evening to teach classes. Then, I spent my nights building the systems and processes to get the business going.

After six months of that, I left my main role as an Enviro and I took on another (this time remote) full-time job as a digital marketing manager for a year and a half while continuing to build AYG. This role was ideal for me to learn about marketing real-time and in-depth! Which is a passion of mine as marketing is really an art of storytelling.

Here’s the thing: in the first couple of years, you truly don’t make an income for yourself. Since all my savings went into the business, there was no safety net, but you just find a way... and yes, you do get desperate sometimes. But it means you go to the depth of resilience, and you're just incredibly tested.

When I finally left my full-time role as a digital marketing manager in September 2023 to go all in with my business, let me tell you, there were moments when I sat in my car outside a pawn shop thinking I might have to sell my mother’s jewelry—jewelry left to me and my sister—just to afford the simplest things in life. But for whatever reason, I couldn’t bring myself to do it, and I’m so glad I didn’t. Somehow, someone—a phone call or an email—would come through with an opportunity that bridged the financial gap.

It is literally month-to-month with a new business (at least in my experience), especially one whose mission is to make well-being accessible and affordable to the masses.

Three years on, we’re still standing. I’m still riding the financial waves, but I’m no longer as frightened by the peaks and troughs. From the outside looking in, a lot of people might think AYG is incredibly successful:
- Over 500 events in 3 years
- More than 30 exhibitions (most of them community or charity-focused)
- Countless yoga, meditation, and dance classes
- Over 150 private events hosted
- And a whole lot of community built.

It’s not easy. I’m still a ‘solopreneur,’ and I’m fortunate to have a small group of volunteers—made up of family and friends—who help me when I need it most. This, for me, is community.
When I look back at all we’ve accomplished, I think to myself, ‘That was magical.’ And so, I guess I am living the dream. It’s just not all rainbows and fairy floss! It’s a lot of hard work. But I’m changing that moving forward—working smarter, managing overheads more effectively, and finally paying myself.
(Side note: I still work 2–3 other “side jobs” as a yoga teacher, marketing manager, and support worker.)

So, here’s to 3 years of AYG—my dreams (and the dreams of many others who get to live theirs through this) coming true.

All my love, and thank you for supporting this mission.

But have you found your community yet?

For those that don't know us yet, Hi! We wanted to create a SAFE space, to go to find community, get support, and evolve using art and wellbeing all in the one space.

Artful Yoga Gallery based in St Kilda, is a first of a kind personal-development art gallery where we have a lot of fun, in a space that feels like home.

If you are looking for ways to help your wellbeing, connect with people, and most importantly feel safe to be as you are - this is the space.

This week we have lots coming up if you're interested check out our what's on page for the details and to join. https://www.artfulyoga.com.au/menu/whatson

We are also always wanting to encourage people to be part of our growing community by way of support, so if you would like to be a volunteer and be part of our events in the future, please email through info@artfulyoga.com.au and we can connect personally

I just want to say I've been deeply helped by this group, supporting me with things I come across as a business owner. It's been a massive achievement to open a new business and stay open. Next month marks 3 years, and I've signed the lease for another 3 years—woohoo!

For those who don't know our story, the studio was built in memory of my mum, who passed from cancer (aged 52). At the time, I was working in science and dove into finding out how and why disease and illness develop, which turned me into someone really passionate about healing. Dis-ease exists in all of us in varying forms, and before it becomes a disease, I wanted to find a way for people to be well and make the healing journey accessible early on—not when it's too late. I also wanted to create a space with no stigma, as an 'art gallery' might be less intimidating than a treatment center (at least for beginning one's journey).

Long story short, it's been a success. It's helping, and more importantly, it's working!

This November, I release my first curated photography exhibition named after my mum, 'Renu,' telling stories through photographs of several cancer patients and their journeys. Several emerging photographers are also collaborating on this project with us, each dedicating their time in-kind.

Our hope is that through this exhibition, we gain an understanding of what other holistic treatments should/could be available to help cancer patients and their families, with a way to fund it 100% through the community so that it can be completely accessible to patients.

The video is a little snippet from co-collaborator Nicole Trimboli (stage 3 bowel cancer survivor and founder of Mastering Me Time), who you'll hear speaking to me (founder of AYG) about her journey. The full video will be released soon.

If the community would like to be involved by way of:

- Volunteering for opening days/events/handing out posters and helping with marketing and awareness campaigns
- Funding opportunities/sponsors (e.g., wellness brands/food/alcohol-free drinks)
- Any incentives or discounts (business) you want to give to the cancer patients we connect with through this campaign
- BIG NEED: A suitable printing service company wanting to collaborate and potentially help with printing (approximately 20 images), for which we will continue using their business to print all works sold.
- Any videographers/photographers wanting to get involved

Looking forward to sending everyone an invite to the opening on Sunday, 27th of October, so you can see the end results.

The Turnaround...

Everyone seems to be driving in this one lane called ‘normal life’ and sticking to the one ‘designated’ speed limit of driving at this intense speed, yet we feel like we’re going nowhere and never quite arriving.

Let me tell you; you have your own lane, and no it’s not the same as everyone else’s.

I started my Yoga journey from the wisdom of Yoga rather than the practice first. My life like everyone else’s had several ups and downs, moving like a sinusoidal curve. Starting with my Mother’s 3rd stage cancer, hitting me hard on my mental peace and composure and running down to a loss of faith in life.

That’s when I leaned on to the teachings of my mother and the teachings of Indian scriptures, the foundation of knowledge that held the answer to every question. Yoga philosophy is what gave me the answers to my ‘why’s’, and then came the practice.
