Sunset at Wheatfield: A Dry Pastel Exploration

Inspired by expressive painting, 'Sunset at Wheatfield' (1888) by Vincent Van Gogh, our recent dry pastel workshop invited residents to capture the golden essence of a setting sun over an expansive wheatfield.

The sky melted into a sea of gold, blending seamlessly with the wheat below. As residents closed their eyes, they could almost feel the gentle breeze swaying through the fields, the tips of the wheat brushing softly against their hands. Through experimentation with dry pastels, they sought to replicate the glowing warmth of the sun casting its final light across the landscape.
Layer by layer, residents followed guided steps to lay down colours, bringing depth and vibrancy to their compositions. The wheat heads, silhouetted against the dusky sky, drifted in the breeze, while the last embers of sunlight painted the fields with soft rose hues. Beyond technique, this exercise evoked deep memories—many residents, having grown up in the North-East of Victoria, found comfort in the familiar sight of wheatfields ready for harvest after a season of labour.

This workshop was not only about technique but also about connection—both to art and to personal experiences. Residents embraced expressive mark-making, layering shades to create movement and emotion in their work. As they shared their progress, encouragement and nostalgia filled the room, reinforcing the therapeutic power of creative expression.

The session embodied the beauty of exploration and the joy of capturing nature’s fleeting moments. We look forward to continuing our artistic journey together, finding inspiration in the world around us.

Much gratitude and thanks to the Staff and residents @ the Mercy Place.

Celebrating Friendship Day
@ the Mercy Place
Friendship is like a shared pot of tea- warm comforting and meant to be enjoyed together. Each cup is a reflection of laughter, support and the quiet moments that make life meaningful. Just as tea requires the right balance of ingredients to create the perfect blend, friendship thrives on trust, understanding and a willingness to share.

Like different tea blends, each friendship brings its own unique flavour. some freindships are bold and invigorating, like storng black tea, that enlivens the senses. Others are gentle and soothing, like chamomile on a quiet evening. and just as tea is best enjoyed with good company, true friendship is found in those who sit with us through life's highs and lows.

The ritual of making tea mirrors the way friendship grows. The careful selection of leaves and steeping process, the patience it requires- these elements remind us that meaningful relationships take time and care. some friendships steep quickly, filling our lives with instant warmth, while others develop slowly their richness unfolding over the years.

A pot of tea is to be shared, and poured generously into waiting cups. Likewise, friendship flourishes when we give freely- offering kindness, listening with an open heart, and being present for one another. It's these shared moments, over cups of tea or long conversations, that friendship deepens and becomes a nourishment for the soul.

So let us celebrate as we would a beautifully brewed pot of tea- with gratitude, intention and the joy of sharing, after all the best moments in life are those shared in good company, savouring the warmth of connection, one cup at a time.

Thank you to all the staff and residents @ the Mercy Place for your continued support and friendship.

What is Mindful Art?
Mindful art is the practice of creating or engaging with art in a way that fosters presence, self-awareness and deep connection to the present moment.

This February Newsletter highlights the beautiful artwork created by the residents over the last few months.

I would also like to express my heartfelt thanks to all the staff at the Mercy Place for their unwavering support and friendship.

Have you ever wondered...
When your time comes, will you be able to say 'I did it all'?

Have you embraced every opportunity to live your best life? Every day is a gift, and we have power to create more joy by enhancing and expanding every moment of magic and happiness.

Yes, pain, sorrow and grief happen. Our experiences unfolds in myriad ways: the good, the bad, and the ugly...
The art of living lies in being open-hearted embracing the experiences that make our hearts sing, contributing to our community, and fostering growth in our human experience.

Reflecting on our Mindful Workshop at Mercy Place, as we herald the beginning of 2025, the residents were invited to share a value they would wished to see more of.

Their reflections included::
• Art
• Fun
• Happiness
• Peace and contentment
• Blessings for my family
Good health

As Peter Sage reminds us in 'Mud or Stars', we face a choice in life:
to sit in despair, focusing solely on what is going wrong, blaming others for our struggles … seeing only the mud around us - or – to embrace responsibility for our choices savouring
the beauty of those moments that uplift us and make our hearts sing. Thus, in this way, we see the ‘Stars’

Recycle, Reuse and repurpose.

Exploring the colour contrast of blue and pink hydrangeas with foliage.

Today's Mindful workshop saw us repurposing calico shopping bags by making them practical objects of art. These lovely bags fold up nicely into handbags ready for that time when we require it when shopping.

We had fun using printing techniques, including hydrangea leaves to create our leaf design. Teaching others to triple load their paint to create a rich depth to the beauty of the flowers. The colours are lush, rich and vibrant.

A big call out to all the residents for being brave enough to try each new art adventure. Again another big thank you to the staff for their continuous wonderful support and friendship.

Birds of a Feather.

The symbolism of a feather means so many things too many.

Feathers speak to us of freedom.
Feathers speak to us of connection.
The feather is a powerful symbol that signifies honour and connection between the owner, the creator and the bird from which the feather came. It represents trust, honour, strength, wisdom and power and freedom. When a feather falls it may be considered a gift from the sky or bird and may impart the attribute of that bird.
Above all feathers can be playful and fun, especially when creating artwork based on this form. In today's workshop we used watercolour paint, collage and ornamental paper to create our colourful designs.

Well done to the residents @ the Mercy Place and the wonderful staff for all the laughter, sharing and creativity.

How to follow your star.

Find your passion and follow that with all of your heart.

Quieting the mind...
at times can seem like a challenge.
However, it is only in a state of stillness that our heart's true desires and yearnings speak. The seeds of intentions, support us in moving forward and learning to listen and trust that.

For me, my heart language is art, all things creative. Sharing this with others is my absolute joy.

For all those who have joined me on this journey, I celebrate with you. May this light burn bright and steer you through the darkest of times and may this joy illuminate your whole life.

Cool Cats

In today's Mindful Workshop, the residents @ the Mercy Place playfully explored creating these wonderful colourful, cool cats.

A cat can symbolise many things. Our cats today capture the playfulness and curiousity, reminding us to relax a little ...
just have fun exploring our creativity through the expressive use of colour.

Cats have long been regarded as spiritual animals, often representing independence, mystery and curiousity. Cats can be said to be enigmatic creatures.

Cats can remind us to take care of ourselves. just as a cat may withdraw to rest and recharge when needed. In this way, the presence of a cat can encourage you to find balance in your life between activity and relaxation.

Fabulous Fish.
Dry pastel workshop at the Mercy Place!

With its graceful swimming movements and bold colours, the koi fish has come to represent several spiritual concepts over the years. In Japanese culture and in China the koi fish is a symbol of luck, abundance and perseverance.

Love the use of contrast the vivid oranges against a sea blue background, and yes the elegance of the koi fish fins and tail are such fun things to explore.

Well done to all the residents who took part in today's art activity.

A big call out to all the staff who continue to jin our workshop and assist residents who need some extra encouragement and support. A lot of perseverance went into completing our beautiful fish.

Just for Fun!

When was the last time you had fun?
Did something that made you smile?

In today's workshop, we reused and repurposed old vintage 80's drink coasters and revamped them into chic black and white coasters, ready for the residents to join 'Happy Hour'. It's always good to have some gloss paint on stand-by to give our work a durable professional touch.

We also made many cards using decorated paper, flowers and sparkly things. It is lovely to have a few handmade cards so that when someone does something we are truly grateful for we have a thank you card ready to go. Making cards is a playful activity as we get to play with assorted goodies and enjoy a relaxed chat with one another.

Thank you again to all the lovely residents at the Mercy Place and the wonderful staff that make each of our workshops such a joy:)
