Nothing like some build ups to finish off the look! 😁

Our awesome patient is almost done with her braces treatment with Dr Albert (orthodontist), so it was time to buildup her front teeth to make them match for her new smile.

Originally her front teeth had small chips and the lateral incisors were naturally a bit smaller. So we built them up with resin composite (not trimming the teeth, no needles needle) to make them match nicely in shape and size.

What a beautiful smile on a beautiful person! 💕

Soft or hard toothbrush? 🪥

It is a common misconception that a hard toothbrush does a better job of cleaning.

I recommend soft or even ultra soft toothbrushes to all my patients - otherwise you can end up damaging your gums!

Here’s some tips for good brushing technique:

🦷 Draw little circles with your toothbrush on all sides of each tooth
🦷 Use a flicking motion to sweep from the gum to the tooth - this removes all the food and plaque that builds up especially along the gum line

It’s the motion, not the pressure, that gets your teeth clean!

This month we saw the amazing Zila who is four years old! 4️⃣(Just in case you didn’t get that from the photo)

Mouthwash 🫗

🦷 Use it at a time separate to brushing if you must use it

🦷 ie. Before brushing (since you don’t want to wash off all the fluoride from your toothpaste) or at lunch time after eating if you don’t have the chance to get to a toothbrush

🦷 Brushing twice daily and flossing daily is actually sufficient!

🦷 Mouthwash is helpful in certain situations such as after special gum treatments (for periodontitis) or surgery (your dentist will recommend one for you in these cases)

🦷 If you do use a mouthwash, try to choose a mouthwash that doesn’t contain alcohol

😲 Are acidic foods and drinks damaging your teeth? 😲

🦷 Acid can cause erosion lesions and wear along and on the surface of teeth, and can even lead to sensitivity

🦷 Things you may not realise are acidic: lemon squeezed in water, soda/mineral/sparkling water, Kombucha, apple cider vinegar

🦷 Salad dressings and vinegarettes, oranges, soft drink, juices and cordials, beer, sparkling wine

🦷 Consider reducing your intake if you are having these daily, or if you can’t, try to have some tap water immediately after any acidic food/drink

🦷 Wait thirty minutes after any acidic food or drink before you brush your teeth, to allow time for your saliva to return and buffer the acid. If you brush immediately after, the acid on your teeth can make your tooth enamel wear away faster

🦷 Excessive acid can also cause your teeth to look yellow over time as the white enamel layer is worn away, revealing more of the inner yellow dentine layer

It’s so important to floss every day!

🦷 Pieces of food can get stuck between your teeth even if you can’t feel it

🦷 This can cause bad bacteria to accumulate and lead to holes or cavities in between your teeth

🦷 Additionally, flossing is important for keeping gums healthy so plaque and tartar (calculus) doesn’t build up and cause an infection or gingivitis

🦷 Try to floss at night time BEFORE brushing, to remove all the food particles first. Then when you brush, the fluoride in the toothpaste can protect against cavities in between your teeth
