Do you find yourself shutting down during conflict—going quiet, feeling blank, or needing to escape the conversation?

This response is often your nervous system trying to protect you from feeling overwhelmed or unsafe. While it can impact relationships, it is something that can be understood and changed with the right strategies.

Building awareness, learning to regulate your emotions, and developing communication skills can make a meaningful difference.

Read more on our blog to understand why this happens and how to manage it, or book an appointment with our team for personalised support.

The transition to parenthood can be one of the most meaningful—and challenging—periods in life.

Many new parents experience sleep deprivation, emotional overwhelm, anxiety, and shifts in identity and relationships. Despite this, it is common to feel pressure to appear as though you are coping well.

As a result, many people do not reach out for support when they need it most.

It is important to remember that struggling during this time does not reflect your ability as a parent. It reflects the reality of a significant life adjustment.

Prioritising your mental health supports not only you, but also your child and your family as a whole.

If you or someone you know is finding this transition difficult, support is available. Book an appointment or read more on our blog today: https://spencermentalhealthcare.com.au/mental-health-for-new-parents/

Many people use the terms ā€œoverstimulatedā€ and ā€œoverwhelmedā€ as if they mean the same thing—but they describe different experiences.

Overstimulation occurs when your senses are overloaded (e.g., noise, lights, busy environments), while overwhelm relates to feeling mentally or emotionally overloaded by stress, pressure, or demands.

Understanding this distinction can help you choose the right strategies to support your wellbeing.

If you are noticing these experiences in your daily life, our team at Spencer Mental Health Care is here to help.

Procrastination isn’t about being ā€œlazy.ā€ It’s usually your brain trying to avoid discomfort — stress, overwhelm, perfectionism, or fear of not doing it ā€œrightā€.

Understanding the why is the first step to changing the patternšŸ’™šŸ’›

Many people wonder why they experience strong emotional reactions, anxiety, or relationship difficulties when there is no clear cause in their own life history. In some cases, the answer may lie in intergenerational trauma.

Research shows that trauma can influence family systems, attachment patterns, and stress responses across generations. However, it is equally important to recognise that these patterns are not fixed.

With awareness, supportive relationships, and evidence-based therapy, individuals can begin to understand their experiences and create meaningful change.

If you need support, you can book an appointment with our psychologists or read more in our latest blog post: https://spencermentalhealthcare.com.au/intergenerational-trauma-research-treatment/

Many people assume eating disorders are always related to body image or weight concerns. However, Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) is a lesser known eating disorder that is often misunderstood.

ARFID involves highly restrictive eating patterns that may be linked to sensory sensitivities, fear-based avoidance of food, or a low interest in eating. It is not simply picky eating, and it is not caused by poor parenting.

ARFID can affect both children and adults and may lead to nutritional deficiencies, anxiety around food, and significant stress at mealtimes. Early assessment and evidence-based support can make a significant difference.

At Spencer Mental Health Care, our psychologists provide assessment and treatment for eating disorders, including ARFID.

If you are struggling with ARFID, visit our blog for more information, or reach out to us to book an appointment with one of our psychologists.
