Christmas holidays can be overwhelming for children who need extra support, with bright lights, loud sounds, changes in routine, and busy environments. Families can help by creating calm spaces, when possible sticking to predictable schedules, using visual supports, practicing social stories about the events, and keeping sensory tools handy. Let’s make the season joyful and inclusive for all!

When children are born, their primary language isn’t words—it’s emotions. Long before they can speak, they express their needs, wants, and feelings through cries, gestures, and facial expressions. This emotional communication is their way of connecting to the world,

This is where coregulation becomes essential. Coregulation is the process where a caregiver helps a child navigate and calm their emotions by offering connection, through our touch, heart beat and breath.
This forms resilience and emotional health in the years to come.

Our very own behind-the-scenes legend, who keeps everything running smoothly, is stepping up to support mental health—a cause close to Reca’s heart.

Today, our hero begins an incredible 72-hour run, starting at Newcastle Lighthouse and finishing at Wollongong Lighthouse at 2pm on Sunday. Come down, say hello, and grab a sausage sizzle to show your support!

Have you heard of the 5 F’s?

The “5 Fs” refer to five different reactions that people might have when faced with a traumatic experience. This can be a one off event or continuous events. These responses are survival mechanisms in our brain and body:

This can be both Adults and Children.

1. **Fight**: This response involves confronting the threat head-on. It’s a reaction of aggression, where the person tries to defend themselves or assert control over the situation.

2. **Flight**: The instinct is to run away or avoid the situation entirely, seeking safety and distance.

3. **Freeze**: When fighting or fleeing feels impossible, the body may shut down and become immobile. Freezing often occurs when someone feels overwhelmed or trapped, leading to a sense of paralysis or dissociation.

4. **Fawn**: A person might become overly accommodating, people-pleasing, or submissive in hopes of avoiding conflict or harm.

5. **Flop**: Flop is a lesser-known response where the body goes limp or collapses, similar to “playing dead.” This reaction can occur when the nervous system is so overwhelmed that it disengages completely, a way of shutting down under extreme stress.
