Practice Manager Spotlight – Jessica Collins

What inspired you to work in healthcare, and how did you find your way into skin cancer care?
I’ve always been drawn to roles that combine leadership with purpose. After years in healthcare management, I joined SkinGP to help build something meaningful from the ground up. Skin cancer care is a space where operational excellence directly impacts lives, and that’s a challenge I’m proud to take on.

What does a typical day as a Practice Manager at SkinGP look like?
No two days are the same! I oversee clinic operations, support our clinical and admin teams, manage patient experience, and ensure compliance with industry standards. From strategic planning to troubleshooting tech issues, I’m involved in every layer that keeps the clinic running smoothly.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in practice management?
Learn to lead with empathy and clarity. Understand your team’s strengths, communicate openly, and always keep patient care at the heart of your decisions. Also—never underestimate the power of good systems and a well-thought-out processes and workflows!

What’s your proudest achievement at SkinGP so far?
Completing AGPAL accreditation and coordinating/ hosting the Melanoma March 2025 within our first year of opening was a huge milestone! We had just over 100 people attend the Melanoma March this year and raised just over $7,000 for the Melanoma Institute Australia. This was a truly a team effort, and I feel very blessed to be part of such a wonderful team that is so passionate about their jobs and know the importance their roles have in our patient’s lives and health journeys.

How do you support your team’s growth and wellbeing?
I focus on creating a culture of support and accountability. Whether it’s professional development opportunities, clear workflows, or just being available to listen—I want every team member to feel valued and empowered.

What’s your favourite part of working in skin cancer care?
Knowing that early detection can save lives. Every efficient process, every well-managed appointment, contributes to that outcome. It’s rewarding to know our work has real impact.

What’s something people might not know about your role?
It’s equal parts strategy and service. I’m working on business plans one moment and helping a patient navigate a referral the next. It’s a dynamic role that requires both big-picture thinking, attention to detail and problem solving all at once.

What’s your favourite way to recharge after a busy day at the clinic?
Spending time with family and friends. Riding my horses and keeping up with my children’s extracurricular activities also keep me busy. I also genuinely enjoy staying up to date with the latest in healthcare by reading industry publications and tuning into podcasts that explore current trends, innovations, and best practices. I really love what I do.

Surgical procedures remain the most effective treatment for many types of skin cancer, offering the highest cure rates and faster healing compared to non-surgical methods.

At Skin GP, our doctors perform these procedures in-clinic under local anaesthetic, treating everything from small, straightforward lesions to more complex cancers.

Every operation is guided by three priorities: complete removal of the cancer, preserving function in the affected area, and minimising scarring for the best possible outcome.

This week (16th - 22nd November) is National Skin Cancer Action Week, an initiative by Cancer Council Australia in combating Australia’s ‘national cancer’.

Fortunately, skin cancer is almost entirely preventable. An easy way to ensure you’re protecting your skin from UV exposure is by making sun protection a daily habit.

No matter your age, you can reduce your risk of developing skin cancer by using all five forms of sun protection when the UV level is 3 or above:

👕 Slip on sun protective clothing that covers as much skin as possible.
🧴Slop on SPF50 or SPF50+, broad-spectrum, and water-resistant sunscreen. Apply it 20 minutes before going outdoors and re-apply every two hours afterwards.
🤠 Slap on a hat—broad brim or legionnaire style to protect your face, head, neck and ears.
⛱️ Seek shade.
😎 Slide on sunglasses—make sure they meet Australian Standards.

National Skin Cancer Action Week (16 - 22 November 2025) highlights that we need to do more to keep sun protection front of mind when UV is 3 or above.

When exposed to UV radiation, it doesn’t take long for skin damage including sunburn to occur, increasing the risk of developing skin cancer later in life. In fact, over-exposure to UV radiation causes up to 95% of melanomas. In every region across Australia, it is likely to reach extreme levels of UV over the summer months.

If you’re not yet in the habit, let this week be an opportunity to get to know your skin and what looks normal for you. If you notice any changes in the size, shape or colour of an existing spot, or the development of a new spot, you should get it checked by the team at Skin GP.

You don’t need to fit a certain profile to benefit from a skin check.

Plenty of people who come to SkinGP don’t have a family history, lots of moles, or past sunburns, they just want peace of mind. And that’s reason enough.

Checking your skin regularly is a simple, proactive way to look after your health, no matter your background or lifestyle.

Skin GP Spotlight: Danni Cadman | Office Manager

What inspired you to work in healthcare, and how did you find your way into skin cancer care?

My experience in the healthcare system has been extensive, both in the public and private sectors, working in clinical neurophysiology, which I found extremely rewarding, working closely with patients, and working with incredible medical teams.

My transition to admin/reception in General Practice 17 years ago has been equally rewarding, ensuring that patients are provided with the highest quality of care, all of which can only be given with the support of the team you work with at all levels.

Ashvin had a vision of providing the community with a first-class skin cancer GP clinic - an opportunity I am very proud to be part of.

What does a typical day at the front desk of a skin cancer clinic look like for you?

A typical day would include monitoring appointments, appointment schedules, and booking patients accordingly (registering new patients or as a follow-up to monitor patient needs).

Welcoming patients as they attend SGP - ensuring they are notified of waiting times, providing forms as required and making them feel comfortable.

The patient’s experience is kindly completed by assisting with making any future appointments if needed, quoting procedures as required, and completing billing and processing Medicare claims.

Administrative duties include processing faxes, emails, and phone enquiries, and offering support to the SGP team at all levels.

How do you help create a calm and welcoming environment for patients who may be anxious about their appointments?

Patients are welcomed with a cheerful and kind approach. The waiting room is filled with background instrumental music, natural light, and comfortable chairs.

Waiting times are regularly monitored, and patients are advised as required, ensuring they are comfortable and offered a drink of water.

Reception is calm and supportive, and a smile goes a long way. If patients are extremely anxious, the clinical team is notified so they can provide equal support for patient care.

Skin Cancer Nurse Spotlight Questionnaire: Tracey McCann

Can you share a memorable moment or patient story that’s stayed with you? A young female patient came in for a routine skin check to discover she had an abnormal-looking mole, which was biopsied and came back as melanoma. She was very shocked and in disbelief. She had surgery and recovered completely. The patient was very grateful for all the care she received. Age doesn’t discriminate with melanoma. As a nurse, you build a rapport with patients and are always hoping for the best outcome.

What’s something unique about working at SkinGP or in a regional clinic like Woodend? As staff, we pride ourselves on a good working culture. We genuinely love our work, and I’m sure that is reflected to the patients with their experience at SkinGP.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone about their skin health, what would it be? Wear sunscreen daily, even if the sun isn’t out. Sunscreen is the best protection for your skin health and to prevent the aging process.

How do you approach helping patients who are anxious about skin checks or procedures? My role as a nurse is to make the patient feel comfortable. It is vital to always explain what to expect when having any treatment or procedure.

If you weren’t a nurse, what do you think you’d be doing instead? After recently attending a festival and seeing brilliant air display, definitely an aerobatic pilot.

At Skin GP, we use FotoFinder ATBM technology to provide total-body photography and digital dermatoscopy. Every mole is captured in high resolution and mapped across the body, creating a baseline that can be tracked for the smallest changes over time.

The system combines sequential imaging with AI-assisted analysis, giving our doctors sharper insights into lesion risk while ensuring no detail is left to memory alone.

This level of precision defines what it means to be a dedicated skin cancer clinic: supporting earlier detection, better outcomes, and a standard of care that regional patients deserve.
