GIRL. I haven’t worn big lashes in how long? But it’s just like riding a bike!

I’m also wearing a lot of glitter in this lady unicorn look, I know. 🦄

I was inspired by unicorns because my daughter is obsessed with them at the moment, and, let’s face it, so am I.

Oh, and body glitter. I’m wearing it too because WHY NOT? FYI, body glitter has come a loooooong way since I wore it back in the day. This one from Urban Decay comes in a tube, and you kinda just put it anywhere — on your face, in your hair, on your arms, on your neck, your legs.

And seriously, it does not come off! My goodness, I remember the old stuff lasting about 2.5 seconds in my clubbing days, so props to the sparkly scientists who finally discovered a way to get glitter to stick to yo’ body.

Eyes: Urban Decay After Dark Palette, Urban Decay 24/7 Pencils (Roxy, Electric Empire), MAC 75 Lashes, MAC Graphblack liner, MAC Princess Jasmine Palette (from the Aladdin collection), Urban Decay Glitter Liner in Disco

Face: MAC Studio Fix in NC42 mixed with Pinklite Strobe Cream, NARS Summer Lights palette (bronzer and highlighter), Urban decay Heavy Metal Glitter Gel in Saturday Stardust

Lips: MAC Honey Love Lipstick, Hourglass Prose Lip Gloss

What do you suppose lady unicorns eat, by the way?

This month I am CRAZY ABOUT CREAMS. Stay tuned for some of my favorite cream makeup products all throughout January.

Just to clarify, this is a joke:

And this is NOT a joke:

(Side note: Thank you, Internet, for making me 😂 laugh every single day.)

I’d be remiss to not include my favorite face creams in this series, and… —–these babies by Clarins ARE NOT PLAYIN’. I always keep at least one jar around because whenever my combo skin starts feeling tight and dry and painful and just plain WEIRD, Clarins is there to rescue me, man. I dab a little on my skin (you don’t need a lot, thank goodness, because these jars, while decently sized, are still expensive), and my tight spots always feel instantly better.

French luxe line Clarins has been around forever, and while the brand may not be as buzzy as Drunk Elephant or Glossier at the moment, I know I can always count on their marvelously moisturizing creams to NOT break me out — and, seriously, EVERYTHING makes me break out.

Also, while I’m using an acid AHA or BHA toner or an anti-aging retinol cream, the Clarins face creams wonderfully counterbalance any aggressive exfoliating products.

LOL. In my mind, I can hear my friend Cindy kinda laughing at me for saying this, but I’m gonna go ahead and say it anyway.

I love working out.

I really do! Granted, the fact that I work at a desk, and it’s very sedentary, probably has something to do with it. When I’m not working, it feels good to actually utilize my body.

I love that loosey-goosey feeling I get from dancing or running or stretching, especially in my upper back and my shoulders, where I hold a lot of my tension… Ahem! Pardon me while I pump out some quick shrugs.

I am not a gym rat, though. I used to be much more so (Gold’s Gym was my jam back in the day), and I still go to a gym a couple times a week because my HIIT class is held in one, but I don’t spend an inordinate amount of time there because, ya know…I got stuff to do.

So I do most of my workouts at home now in my living room watching a YouTube video on the TV.

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Excellent question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll, like with little clicky buttons. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past quadrillion years (since 2007). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a good start.

1. How well do you pull off slang?

Oh, boy. Ha ha ha! I can’t help but laugh at this question, because at one point in time I felt like I was “hip” (she says awkwardly!) to the slang here in the Bay Area, but now I just… I don’t think I can do it anymore. I just feel awkward when I try it, and sometimes, I swear, I don’t know what people are saying! You know it’s probably time to retire your slang habit when you do things like google, “Why do kids say Gucci.”

I mean, I will occasionally still throw a “hella” here and there, just because it’s part of my vocabulary DNA (Hey, man, what can I say? I grew up in the East Bay.), but I generally don’t use as much slang as I used to.

This is NOT my breakfast, I swear. This is the practice pre-Easter roast chicken and potato dish I made earlier this week.

I get really nervous when I have to cook something new for people other than El Hub, Tabs and Connor, so I like to practice a dish one or two times.

I dunno… It’s just that I’m not naturally gifted with cooking. Sure, I can follow a recipe and do OK, but I don’t want people to leave hungry. I want you to come over and stuff yourself silly. That’s my new mission in life, which is why I do things like practice runs of this roast chicken and potato dish, which I think I also talked about in last week’s Saturday Surfing (yes, after 11 years of blogging, sometimes I repeat myself, haha).

It turned out really well! The recipe’s by Laura Vitale of Laura in the Kitchen. Her recipes aren’t fussy, and they’re delicious and easy to follow. This one took me 10 minutes to prep the night before. Basically, you throw the marinade ingredients and the chicken into a bowl, then stick it into the fridge overnight so the flavors can marry.

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Good question! It isn’t, contrary to its name, an actual poll. It’s just a list of five more or less random questions I’ve been posting on this blog every Monday morning for the past gazillion years (more than 10!). I love reading your answers, and it helps me get my week off to a great start. 👍

1. A makeup brush you use every day?

I almost always use some kind of domed eyeshadow brush like the MAC 217, usually to apply or blend eyeshadow (yup, both powder and cream shadows!), but sometimes I’ll get it up in the mix to mellow out whatever’s underneath my eyes. Yesterday it was Benefit Boing Hydrating Concealer, which, by the way, if you don’t know, NOW YOU KNOW (review coming soon).

2. If you could have any gallon-sized bottle of any bath/shower product for free (like a shampoo, conditioner, body wash, or whatever you can think of), what would choose?

Oh, definitely one of the Oribe conditioners (probably Gold Lust), because homegirl’s gonna get her $$$’s worth! First of all, a liter of Gold Lust Conditioner is (wait for it) $182, and a gallon has almost 4 liters.

What’s an unsung makeup hero? For me, it’s an oftentimes underrated makeup morsel, a permanent collection product that scoots under the radar screen of many makeup lovers but regularly rocks my world. The long-running Unsung Heroes series features some of my favorites.

Nobody puts baby in the corner, and nobody puts bullsh*t top coats on my nails.

I’ve had the time of my life!

Like the ladies who unabashedly carry hot sauce in their purse, I’ve reached that point in life where I bring Essie Gel Couture Top Coat with me everywhere (no, seriously, I keep it in my touch-up makeup bag), including the nail salon.

On the rare occasion that I get my nails 💅 done, it’s the ONLY top coat that I know can withstand all of the obstacles the universe throws in my path — the never-ending deluge of dishes, the ferocious onslaught of words inside my head waiting to be unleashed upon this keyboard underneath my fingertips, and, ya know, toddlers. They always have those Lego blocks that need to be pried apart and My Little Ponies that need their manes braided LIKE YESTERDAY.

So…what is the Monday Poll?

Well, it isn’t exactly a poll… It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been doing every Monday morning for the past 11 (!) years. (It’s like a kick start for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments and getting my week off to a good start, and I hope you do, too.

1. Are you and your siblings a lot alike?

It’s just my younger brother Al and I, and we have the same strange sense of humor and the same, like, zeal for life? On the big things, like politics and religion, I think we’re on a similar page.

But we’re also different in a lot of mostly small ways, too. For instance, I like pop music, and he likes music that’s too experimental and cerebral for me. 🙂

One of the bigger differences between us is how we approach our roles in the family, and this is probably because of birth order. I’m the older one, and I feel like it’s on me a lot of the time to plan things and steer the ship, whereas Al just gets to be a passenger on the ship…

Two little lines.

At its core, that’s what winged liner is — just two little lines — but anyone who’s ever scored two fierce flicks knows that winged liner is so much more than double dashes angling from outer corners.

To non-makeup people, winged liner may seem trivial, but we know the truth… It’s totally transformative!

On any given day, all it takes is a small adjustment in the flick of a wrist, or a choice to use a different color or finish, and I can be whatever I want. 🦅🕊️🦋👼

On most days, you’ll find me wearing some variation of kitten flicks, because there’s just something about those snazzy snaps that says, “MEOW, I’m not a regular mom. I’m a cool mom.” 😂

On other days, though, like when I need an emotional high-kick capable of shattering a ceiling, I’ll frame my lash lines in flicks so glittery and gleaming that you can see them waaaaaaay past the cheap seats in the back.

BAM! — watch out, world, because I’m coming for you in my bad- diva wings!

And, of course, there’s always what I call my “comfort wings,” which are basically my makeup equivalent of black stretchy pants — a thin black line with a slightly upturned, softened, diffused edge.

Hey there, sweet pea. Happy Caturday!

I have a theory that if there’s ever anything I’ve felt or believed, chances are, someone else out there has felt or believed it too, soooooo…let’s talk hair.

I know it’s insignificant in the universal scheme of things, but I’ve been feeling kinda low-grade “meh” lately because of various voracious viruses over the past month since Connor started preschool, and I’ve only really started feeling like myself again in the last few days, so yesterday I forced myself to style my hair for the first time in weeks, even though I really just wanted to put it up in a messy bun and forget about it…

But you know what? I feel so much more functional when my hair is done.

Is that weird?

It’s like when I wear pajamas all day long… Whenever I do it, I feel crappy and unmotivated to do anything at all, and apparently it’s the same way for me with hair. When I take the time to style it and do at least a little something to smooth my bangs and curl a few pieces framing my face, I feel better and more capable of heading out into the world.

A second bunch of data from the European Space Agency’s Gaia satellite has been released today and the archive is live now.

Gaia creates richest star map of our Galaxy – and beyond

A multitude of discoveries are on the horizon after this much awaited release, which is based on 22 months of charting the sky. The new data includes positions, distance indicators and motions of more than one billion stars, along with high-precision measurements of asteroids within our Solar System and stars beyond our own Milky Way Galaxy.

1. A bagel with cream cheese, or yogurt with fruit?

I’ll take the bagel, and none of that “whole wheat” or “mini bagel” nonsense. Give me a good old-fashioned regular bagel, and toast that bad boy up! And get some Trader Joe’s Chive Cream Cheese on there, too. 😀

2. Makeup or skin care?

YO, at this point in my 40-something life? I’ll take ALL OF THE SKIN CARE. All. Of. It.

3. What’s the best way to treat yourself?

Oh, that’s easy (but hard to finagle). I love it when I can spend an entire day only doing things that make me happy.

4. If you were required to hang out with someone from a reality TV show, who would you choose?

If I could go to Mars, but I could only bring one tube of mascara with me… LOL! It’s a variation on the “deserted island” theme.

Anyway, would I bring new Benefit BADgal BANG! Volumizing Mascara?

Hmm… Maybe? Perhaps for the poetic irony, because according to Benefit, BADgal BANG! does incorporate space-age technology, so there’s that… Benefit says that they used lightweight aero-particles, which were first developed by the space industry, to lift lashes to gravity-defying heights.

“BADgal BANG! 36 HOUR* FULL-BLAST volumizing mascara creates MASSIVE volume without weighing down lashes. The gravity-defying formula contains aero-particles, one of the lightest known materials, derived from space technology. This innovative intense pitch black mascara layers easily for bigger & BIGGER impact. It’s custom big Slimpact! brush is streamlined to reach root-to-tip, corner-to-corner, upper & lower lashes for BIG VOLUME WITH 360° REACH!”

— benefitcosmetics.com

My lashes definitely look lifted when I wear it…but seriously, not nearly lifted enough. In fact, the formula relaxes a lash curl a bit and leaves the ends of my lashes pointing out rather than sticking up (I prefer the latter look because I think my lashes look curlier that way).

I’m feeling ’90s music nostalgia right now. It must be a side effect of carrying around a little black backpack again. I’ve been listening to some old songs I haven’t heard in literally decades.

Funny how you can not hear a song for years but still know the lyrics…

I always thought Trent Reznor seemed like a cool guy.

Gather up your jackets; move it to the exits.

Holla if you know who Alanis wrote this song about!

I wonder if this guy ever managed to get some air?

All malls looked like this one back in the day.

CHECK THE BROWS THO!

You can always count me in for 1) a Keanu Reeves movie and 2) an iced latte, but a fun bun? These days, they’re hit or miss for me. Sometimes, you can’t beat a quick and messy bun for convenience, but there are also days when haphazardly shoving my hair up just won’t do.

I’m the type of gal who absolutely NEEDS to get out of her pajamas first thing in the morning; otherwise, I feel absolutely useless, and lately it’s been the same way for my hair. I need to style my hair in order to feel productive, which is why I’ve been all about braids.

The half-up Dutch braid I’ve been wearing for a while doesn’t take too much time to do (less than 10 minutes), and I feel mostly functional when I’m wearing it.

I found a good how-to video for it on YouTube last week. It’s the first style in this roundup of 10 styles, and I modified it slightly by using small hair ties instead of bobby pins.

Dude, I’ve been watching SO MANY braiding videos on YouTube lately, and you don’t even wanna know how deep I stumbled down the rabbit hole last weekend!

No, the LHC will not make contact with parallel universes.

The most recent news about quantum gravity phenomenology going through the press is that the LHC upon restart at higher energies will make contact with parallel universes, excuse me, with PARALLEL UNIVERSES. The telegraph even wants you to believe that this would disprove the Big Bang, and tomorrow maybe it will cause global warming, cure Alzheimer and lead to the production of butterflies at the LHC, who knows…

If your current favorite lipstick fell into the toilet, would you fish it out and keep using it? ASKING FOR A FRIEND.

Oh, girlfriend. I had MAC Velvet Teddy, a tube in the LE packaging that matches the color inside, which for some reason gives me so much joy… Anyway, I had it in my back pocket yesterday and sorta forgot about it. I was rushing around right before going to go pick up Coywolf from preschool. Went to the bathroom, and right before I was about to leave, pulled down my stretchy mom jeans, and next thing you know I hear a PLOP!

First thing I think is, “Holy sh*t, my phone!” Was not my phone, thank goodness. It was my tube of MAC Velvet Teddy, which I love, love, love, love, love so much.

I fished it out and set it on my desk to dry, and now I don’t know what to do with it!

So, the toilet was um…”not used,” so the water was fresh, and it’s my toilet, so I might use the lipstick again? I don’t know. I’m still very grossed out by this.
