What is Farm Life Day? 🐣
Farm Life Day is a supported, centre based program that invites you to spend time on the farm engaging in meaningful activities with animals, land, and people. It is about being outdoors, doing purposeful things, enjoying a slower pace, and connecting with others in ways that respect who you are.
What kinds of things might we do?
Activities vary depending on the season, the group, and your interests. These may include:
✅ Caring for and spending time with animals, which may include feeding and grooming horses, caring for fish, and looking after other animals on the property
✅ Hatching and raising chickens
✅ Planning, building, and maintaining animal shelters and spaces
✅ Gardening and working in outdoor spaces, including learning how to grow your own healthy food and being supported to make this possible at home
✅ Supported participation in farm tasks and projects that align with your goals and build real world skills transferable to other areas of life (such as planning, preparing, problem solving, and working alongside others)
✅ Sharing, preparing, and planning morning tea or lunch together
✅ Time to pause, take time out for yourself, observe, and enjoy a slower pace on the farm
You may also have opportunities to:
✅ Observe visiting wildlife throughout the seasons, including Max and Maggie the magpies, blue wrens and their harems, w***y wagtails, Jemima, Pumpkin and Nigel the mountain ducks, and at times wallabies, wedge tailed eagles, echidnas, lizards, and possums
✅ Take part in paddock to plate experiences
✅ Learn to build and operate a greenhouse
✅ Cultivate cuttings or seedlings as a budget friendly way to participate in nature
✅ Try new things and ignite new passions
Depending on group needs and preferences, there may also be opportunities for supported outings in the local community.
What can you expect from the program?
👉🏻 A calm, supportive environment with clear structure and purpose
👉🏻 Boundaries that are respected and encouraged, recognising that boundaries are an important social skill
👉🏻 Support workers who participate alongside you
👉🏻 Opportunities for connection without pressure to socialise in particular ways
👉🏻 Respect for individual preferences, energy levels, communication styles, and needs
Free Rein Adventure also has an on site large group room available for wet weather days or when an indoor space is preferred.
How does this align with NDIS supports?
Farm Life Day supports social connection and community participation by helping you build friendships and enjoy your community in ways that feel right for you.
Sometimes the NDIS refers to this as building informal supports. What this means is being supported to grow your own friendship groups and connections, based on shared experiences and interests.
The program also supports confidence, everyday life skills, and increasing independence through real world, meaningful experiences. It may be accessed through Core Supports or Capacity Building funding, depending on your plan and goals.
Anything else to know?
You don’t need prior farm experience. Curiosity, interest, and a willingness to engage in ways that suit you are enough.
