In Loving Memory of Emerita Professor Hazel Simmons-McDonald (1947 – 2025)

It is with profound sadness that we mourn the passing of our beloved member, Emerita Professor Hazel Simmons-McDonald. Her transition leaves a quiet ache in our hearts, yet her spirit continues to inspire and uplift us. Hazel was a remarkable presence - steadfast in her commitment and devotion to the Association, gracious in her interactions, and ever open to evolving spiritually. From the very beginning, she brought a sincere heart and a discerning mind to her Reiki journey. Her calm presence, thoughtful words, joie de vivre and radiant smile enriched our gatherings and fostered a deep sense of belonging among us.

Those who knew her best admired not only her kindness and humility but also her unwavering dedication. Hazel rarely missed a monthly meeting, choosing not to take on other commitments that would interfere with our shared time. She participated fully - not out of obligation, but out of love and alignment with her values. She also attended classes with enthusiasm, ever the humble learner, even as her wisdom gently shone through. She was someone who quietly uplifted others. We will remember her graciousness, soft laughter, and the gentle strength that anchored every room she entered.

It was only after her passing that some of us came to truly appreciate the breadth of her accomplishments in academia. A scholar of great distinction, Professor Simmons-McDonald was a poetess, a champion of Creole language, literature and culture, and reached the highest echelons of management of The University of the West Indies (UWI) to become Pro-Vice-Chancellor and the first Principal of the Open Campus. Yet, she never boasted. She walked with quiet confidence and let her actions speak. Her brilliance was matched by her modesty.

Hazel showed what it means to live with purpose, grace, and generosity. Her example reminds us that service to others, especially in quiet ways, can be a profound form of love. On behalf of the Barbados Reiki Association, we extend heartfelt condolences to her loved ones. Hazel, may you be enfolded in peace and light.
