These are:
• a person’s symptoms
• a physical examination and

Wear & tear as we age along with its corresponding symptoms cause many doctors to misdiagnosis patients leaving DCM to progress, worsening over time.

Most people wait years for a diagnosis as this condition is still very misunderstood leading to a poorer prognosis once discovered.

Cervical myelopathy can affect the brain as was confirmed in a study done in 2020.

The messages through your spinal cord go both ways — from your brain to your body & vice versa. When cervical myelopathy starts to progress, it limits the ability of your brain to interpret what your body is saying.

This can feel like numbness & tingling, cognition issues (“brain fog“), and a lack of spatial awareness.

Cervical myelopathy is a progressive condition. This means that symptoms grow worse over time.

After the initial stage, which consists mostly of neck pain and stiffness, other, more severe symptoms may begin to appear.

These 𝐬𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐞:

• difficulty walking or keeping your balance
• confusion or cognitive difficulty
• loss of bladder control
• tingling or numbness in your extremities

Many of these symptoms are disregarded as common side effects of ageing.

No, we are not referring to the euphemism for an annoying person.

Along with the symptom noted above, some of the early signs of Cervical Myelopathy might include:

🔹 neck stiffness
🔹 limited range of motion
🔹 fine motor clumsiness, such as difficulty holding a pen or counting out change
🔹 headache that stems from nerves in your neck (occipital neuralgia)

As a person ages, the disks in their spine start to lose height & begin to bulge. They also lose water content, dry out & become stiff. The result is collapse of disk space & loss of space height.

When this happens, the vertebrae move closer together & the body responds to a collapsed disk by forming bone spurs in an attempt to strengthen the disk.

Bone spurs cause stiffness & narrowing of the spinal canal and start to compress the spinal cord.

It is caused by any condition that puts pressure on the spinal cord and can occur anywhere in the spine, including in the neck (cervical spine) & the torso (thoracic spine).

Symptoms of spinal cord compression may develop suddenly or gradually.

Potential causes of spinal cord compression include:
• Degenerative conditions
• Rheumatoid arthritis
• Disk Herniation
• Injuries
• Bone Spurs
• Tumors
