Cervical myelopathy is a progressive condition. This means that symptoms grow worse over time.
After the initial stage, which consists mostly of neck pain and stiffness, other, more severe symptoms may begin to appear.
These ๐ฌ๐ฒ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ญ๐จ๐ฆ๐ฌ ๐ฆ๐๐ฒ ๐ข๐ง๐๐ฅ๐ฎ๐๐:
โข difficulty walking or keeping your balance
โข confusion or cognitive difficulty
โข loss of bladder control
โข tingling or numbness in your extremities
Many of these symptoms are disregarded as common side effects of ageing.

No, we are not referring to the euphemism for an annoying person.
Along with the symptom noted above, some of the early signs of Cervical Myelopathy might include:
๐น neck stiffness
๐น limited range of motion
๐น fine motor clumsiness, such as difficulty holding a pen or counting out change
๐น headache that stems from nerves in your neck (occipital neuralgia)

It is caused by any condition that puts pressure on the spinal cord and can occur anywhere in the spine, including in the neck (cervical spine) & the torso (thoracic spine).
Symptoms of spinal cord compression may develop suddenly or gradually.
Potential causes of spinal cord compression include:
โข Degenerative conditions
โข Rheumatoid arthritis
โข Disk Herniation
โข Injuries
โข Bone Spurs
โข Tumors

๐This is why we want to bring awareness to this condition as it is becoming more prevalent.

๐๐ ๐๐๐ซ๐๐ก ๐๐๐๐ - New recommendations were recently released by the American College of Surgeons' (ACS') Trauma Quality Programs regarding ๐๐ฝ๐ฑ๐ฎ๐๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ด๐๐ถ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐น๐ถ๐ป๐ฒ๐ ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฟ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐น๐ ๐๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐ฝ๐ถ๐ป๐ฎ๐น ๐ถ๐ป๐ท๐๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฒ๐.
Christine Cocanour, MD, FACS, professor of clinical surgery at UC Davis Health in Sacramento, California, and chair of the ACS Committee on Trauma's Best Practices Guidelines Committee, told Medscape Medical News:
"As our committee thought about potential topics for a new best practices guideline, spine injury was a leading topic, because although it is relatively rare, it can have devastating consequences, and there are a number of management areas that remain controversial."
In nonoperative injuries, the new ACS guidelines call for discontinuing bracing when possible in favor of early patient mobilization.
If surgical stabilization is needed, it should occur early in the treatment algorithm.

When we talk about SCI (Spinal Cord Injury) and/or TSIs (Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury), we use the terms complete & incomplete when referring to the extent of the spinal injury.
It is then further classified using the ASIA (American Spinal Injury Association) Impairment Scale.

๐นSimply put, when one area loses function, other undamaged areas of the brain can take over.
E.g., if a stroke causes an area of brain damage, other parts of the nervous system can take over the lost function of the damaged area.
The chance of recovery is greatest in patients 40 & younger

Traumatic spinal cord injuries (SCI) have devastating lifelong sequelae for affected individuals, caregivers, & society. Modest improvements in sensorimotor function can significantly enhance quality of life and decrease costs of care.
Why is early surgical intervention critical?
โก๏ธEarly surgical decompression of the injured spinal cord is one of the few available interventions that can potentially alter the long-term recovery trajectory for this devastating condition.
Early decompression has a sound pathophysiologic rationale, clinical evidence of efficacy, & international guideline recommendations as a treatment option.

Anna Gonzales had numbness & falls for months. She was offered surgery, but doctors were cautiously optimistic as there was a 20% to 30% chance of success.
Anna then had a minor fall in a parking lot and was paralyzed from the neck down. Doctors noted she had a badly damaged spine.

When back pain is caused by a cancerous spinal tumor, it typically:
โข Starts gradually & worsens over time
โข Does not improve with rest & may intensify at night
โข Flares up as a sharp or shock-like pain in the upper or lower back, which may also go into the legs, chest, or elsewhere in the body
โข Other signs & symptoms that could potentially indicate the origin of back pain from cancer include unplanned weight loss, nausea, fever, chills, or other troubling symptoms.

Currently, there is no available medical treatment that can restore discs to their original condition. Itโs also impossible to stop further disc disintegration, though you may be able to slow it by avoiding activities that strain your back.
If the pain is not severe, home care, such as applying heat or ice to the affected area and taking an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication like ibuprofen, may be sufficient to relieve pain.
More serious discomfort may require medical treatment, including steroid injections. Physicians sometimes recommend spinal surgery for severe cases of degenerative disc disease.

Some estimates have the discโs water content typically falling to 70% by age 70, but in some people the disc can lose hydration much more quickly.

Thatโs the % of water during childhood in the 6 gel-like cervical discs (1 between each of the cervical spineโs vertebrae) that absorb shock & prevent vertebral bones from rubbing against each other while the neck moves.
This % decreases as we age.
