A commode can make a big difference in comfort, safety, and dignity for elderly patients, especially those with limited mobility or medical conditions.
One of our patients have Parkinson’s disease which affects her joints tremendously and causes her pain, we suggested a commode as her toilet seat was to short which causes her to struggle to get on and off while also causing strain on her nurses and caregivers to get her up. Since bought she is able to use the bathroom without feeling pain or frustration
Here are some other key benefits:
🛑 1. Reduces Risk of Falls
Getting to the bathroom can be dangerous, especially at night. A commode placed near the bed helps prevent slips and falls, which are common in seniors.
🚶🏽♀️ 2. Supports Limited Mobility
For patients who struggle with walking, standing, or balance (e.g. after surgery, stroke, or weakness), a commode eliminates the need to travel far.
⏱️ 3. Quick & Convenient Access
Elderly patients often have urgency (like with bladder issues). A commode allows them to go quickly without discomfort or accidents.
🛏️ 4. Ideal for Bedridden Patients
Bedside commodes are perfect for patients who cannot leave the bed easily, making caregiving smoother and more efficient.
🧼 5. Promotes Hygiene
Using a commode reduces the risk of soiling themselves, which helps prevent skin irritation, infections, and embarrassment.
💪🏽 6. Encourages Independence
Many commodes come with armrests and adjustable height, helping seniors sit and stand with less assistance—boosting confidence.
❤️ 7. Preserves Dignity
Having a private, nearby option can make elderly patients feel more comfortable and less dependent on others for toileting.
👩🏽⚕️ Bonus for Caregivers:
• Easier to assist patients safely
• Less strain from lifting or rushing to the bathroom
• Better monitoring of bowel and urinary output if needed #246
