Profile on Dr Mir Nizamuddin Ahmed
The Chief Executive and Lead Clinician of the Centre, Dr M N Ahmed has single handedly brought the centre to where it is today.
Originally hailing from Old Dhaka, with his family roots well established in business, Dr Ahmed took to medicine, studying in the prestigious Dhaka Medical College in the mid 60's. During the 70's, he focused on Internal Medicine under the tutelage of Professor E T Baker-Bates in the Northwest of England. During this time, he completed an MSc, two diplomas (in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene and Venerology) and became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene in London. He then took on a Medical Directorship in the Saudi summer capital of Taif in the early 80's.
Having spent about two decades away from his motherland, he felt the strong urge to return and use the experience and the expertise he had gathered to benefit the underprivileged society he had left behind.
On his return, he set up Dr Nizam Medical Centre in Lalbagh during the late 80's. Here, he would see patients of the wider community, but he also set up the Bakka Memorial Service (in remembrance of his late mother) for the poor and destitute to be seen and treated free of cost.
Over the course of the last 25 years, he has expanded his service to set up a second branch in Niketan, Gulshan 1, run services under the banner of ZABS in Uttarkhan, Uttara, and hold medical camps in Habiganj, Gaznaipur and other areas of the country.
