Runeberg cake (Finnish Runebergintorttu; Swedish Runebergstårta) is a confection made with the addition of almond crumbs, arak or rum and decorated with a drop of raspberry jam in a sugar glaze ring, has a cylindrical shape and weighs about 100 g. The cake got its name from the name revered Finnish poet Johan Ludwig Runeberg (1804-1877), author of the national anthem, who, according to legend, was a great lover of this delicacy. The cake recipe, originally from Porvoo pastry chef Lars Asthenius, was perfected by Runeberg's wife Fredrika.
