১৯৪৫ সাল।
যু*দ্ধবিধ্বস্ত জাপান।
এক কিশোর তার মৃ*ত ভাইকে মাটি চাপা দিতে পিঠে করে বয়ে নিয়ে যাচ্ছে। একজন আর্মি অফিসার বিষয়টি লক্ষ্য করে কিশোরকে বললেন, "লাশটা পিঠ থেকে ফেলে দাও, ওটা অনেক ভারী।"

কিশোরটি সঙ্গে সঙ্গে দৃঢ় স্বরে জবাব দিল, "সে ভারী নয়, সে আমার ভাই!" আর্মি অফিসারের কিছুক্ষণ সময় লাগে ঘটনাটি বুঝতে। এরপর পুরো বিষয়টি অনুধাবন করতে পেরে কান্নায় ভেঙে পড়েন তিনি।

এই ঘটনা নিমেষে ছড়িয়ে পড়ে সমগ্র জাপান জুড়ে। সেই থেকে ছবিটি হয়ে ওঠে দেশটির ঐক্যের প্রতীক। ভাইকে পিঠে তুলে নেওয়া কিশোরের ওই উক্তি হয়ে যায় তাদের জাতীয় স্লোগান: "সে বোঝা নয়, সে আমার ভাই/বোন।" (He’s not a burden, he’s my brother/sister.)

আপনার ভাই বা বোন যদি পড়ে যায়, তাকে উঠান। যদি তার সামর্থ্য না থাকে, যদি সে দুর্বল হয়, তার পাশে দাঁড়ান। আর যদি সে ভুল করে, তাকে ক্ষমা করে দিন। পৃথিবী যদি তাকে পরিত্যাগ করে, আপনি তাকে আপনার পিঠে তুলে নিন। কারণ সে বোঝা নয়, সে আপনার ভাই/বোন।
