বিশ্ব স্বাস্থ্য সংস্থার (ডব্লিউএইচও) তথ্য অনুযায়ী, বিশ্বে প্রতিবছর ৮২ লাখের বেশি মানুষ ক্যানসারে আক্রান্ত হয়ে মারা যান। বিশেষত প্রতিবছর বিশ্বে সাড়ে ১০ কোটি নারী স্তন ক্যানসারে আক্রান্ত হন। আশঙ্কার খবর হলো, ক্যানসারে আক্রান্ত ব্যক্তিদের অধিকাংশই বাংলাদেশসহ উন্নয়নশীল বিশ্বের।

নারীদের ক্ষেত্রে তিন ধরনের ক্যানসারের রোগী বেশি দেখা যায়। সেগুলো হলো—সার্ভিক্যাল বা জরায়ু মুখের ক্যানসার, ওভারিয়ান বা ডিম্বাশয়ের ক্যানসার এবং স্তন ক্যানসার। তাঁর মতে, দেশে নারীরা জরায়ু মুখের ক্যানসার ও স্তন ক্যানসারে বেশি মারা যাচ্ছেন।
