Autism Awareness Month… but let’s be honest for a second.
I don’t agree with it.
Not because awareness isn’t important, but because it’s become a tick-box exercise. A way to look like we’re doing something, without actually changing anything.
The autistic community makes up a significant part of our population. This isn’t niche. This isn’t rare.
We shouldn’t need a single month to “remember” to be aware.
We should already be there.
That said—if we are going to have this month, let’s make it mean something.
👇 I’ve added resources below.
https://notfineinschool.co.uk/home a website with resources for parents and children currently not in school.
https://autismunderstood.co.uk a website to help adolescence understand autism
https://www.neurostorycollective.com stories written by neurodivergent people
https://autidacts.org/ena a rich array of autism-related information
If you want to genuinely support the autistic community:
Take the time to read
Learn something new
Challenge your own perceptions
Because real change doesn’t come from awareness.
It comes from understanding and what we do with it.
