Management of Diarrhoea (especially in children)
1. Assess the child
Degree of dehydration (none / some / severe)
Frequency & nature of stool
Presence of blood, fever, vomiting
2. Rehydration (most important)
ORS:
Give small, frequent sips
Continue after each loose stool
IV fluids (if severe dehydration or shock):
Ringerâs lactate / Normal saline
3. Continue feeding
Continue breastfeeding
Give normal age-appropriate diet
Avoid oily, spicy food
4. Zinc supplementation
< 6 months: 10 mg/day for 14 days
âĨ 6 months: 20 mg/day for 14 days
5. Treat associated problems
Antipyretics for fever
Antiemetics if vomiting (if prescribed)
Antibiotics only if indicated (e.g. dysentery, cholera)
6. Prevent complications
Maintain hygiene
Monitor intake & output
Observe for signs of dehydration
7. Health education
Safe drinking water
Hand washing
Proper food hygiene
