The United Nations has officially recognized June 27th as the first ever International Day of Deafblindness, aligning it with Helen Keller Day.

In a separate session, Prof. Robiul Kabir Chowdhury, additional chairman of the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB), said, "No country can truly develop if any section of society is left behind." He stressed the importance of inclusive education and the need for committed, well-trained teachers.

CDD Executive Director A.H.M. Noman Khan said, "For two decades, we have worked with people who face extreme physical limitations. Supporting them is both a responsibility and a privilege." He added that Global Deafblindness Resource Hubs have now been launched in eight countries with the support of Sense International.

সমাজসেবা অধিদপ্তরের মহাপরিচালক মো. সাইদুর রহমান খান বলেন, প্রতিবন্ধী ব্যক্তিরা প্রান্তে অবস্থান করবে না। তারা অবস্থান করবে কেন্দ্রে। প্রতিবন্ধী ব্যক্তিদের জন্য স্থায়ী বন্দোবস্ত করতে হবে। এটা তাদের ন্যায্য অধিকার।

শুধু সমাজসেবা অফিস না, প্রতিবন্ধী ব্যক্তিদের জন্য আলাদা একটি অধিদপ্তরও দরকার। এ সময় শ্রবণদৃষ্টি প্রতিবন্ধিতা দিবসকে জাতীয় দিবস হিসেবে ঘোষণা করার কার্যক্রম হাতে নেওয়ার আশ্বাসও দেন তিনি।

শুধু নারীর ক্ষমতায়ন নয়, সময় এসেছে প্রতিবন্ধী ব্যক্তিদেরও ক্ষমতায়নের। রাষ্ট্রীয় কর্মকাণ্ডে প্রতিবন্ধী ব্যক্তিদেরও অংশীদারত্বের সুযোগ দিতে হবে বলে মন্তব্য করেছেন সমাজসেবা অধিদপ্তরের মহাপরিচালক মো. সাইদুর রহমান খান।

We are excited to announce the launch of the Global Deafblindness Resource Hub (GDRH), developed by Sense International and officially launched in Bangladesh by the Centre for Disability in Development (CDD).

This accessible online platform is dedicated to supporting people with deafblindness, their families, and professionals by offering a wide range of practical resources, tools, and guidance, all in Bengali and other accessible formats.

The Hub focuses on Understanding deafblindness, Accessing inclusive education, Rights-based approaches, Family and community support, Real-life stories and tools for advocacy.

Historic Milestone!

The UN General Assembly has officially declared 27th June as the International Day of Deafblindness, starting in 2025!

This landmark recognition acknowledges deafblindness as a distinct disability with its own unique challenges and support needs for inclusion and participation in society.

Big shout out to the World Federation of the Deafblind (WFDB) for their tireless advocacy and unwavering dedication in making this global milestone a reaIity!

Let’s unite to raise awareness, break barriers, and amplify the voices of persons with deafblindness!

According to the World Federation of the Deafblind (WFDB), nearly 66,000 people in Bangladesh are living with deafblindness- a unique and complex disability that combines both vision and hearing loss.

While the Bangladesh Housing and Population Census (2022) reports that 0.60% of the total disability population are persons with deafblindness who face extreme isolation, limited access to education, communication barriers, and exclusion from services. Since 2009, CDD has supported over 1,600 deafblind individuals.

Despite the daily challenges and resilience of those living with deafblindness, they remain largely invisible in both national and global discussions.

We're calling on the United Nations to officially recognize June 27th as the International Day of Deafblindness, a day to acknowledge, uplift, and advocate for the rights and inclusion of people with deafblindness worldwide.

We were glad to host a focus group discussion at PAPRI in Narayanpur, Narsingdi as part of the testing of Global Deafblindness Resource Hub.

This meaningful session brought together individuals with deafblindness, their families, caregivers, and local stakeholders to share their experiences, needs, and insights.

Their valuable input will help shape a global platform that truly reflects the diverse realities and strengths of the deafblind community.

A huge thank you to all the participants and facilitators for making this conversation impactful and inclusive.
