Digital transformation is reshaping postal jobs across Europe — and today, the European Social Dialogue Committee for the Postal Sector (SDC) took an important step forward.

At the final conference of the EU project “Postal Skills and Work Environment in the Digital Transition: New Reflections from the Social Partners”, employers and trade‑union representatives came together to present the main findings of a two‑year collaboration on the future of skills, work organisation and occupational health and safety in our sector.

Maria Luisa Cabral, Director for Quality Jobs, Working Conditions and Social Dialogue DG EMPL, emphasised the essential role of social dialogue in shaping future‑proof jobs and navigating the opportunities and challenges of AI. Her message was clear: social partners are key drivers of change.
Botond Szebeny, Secretary General of PostEurop, reinforced this by underlining that skills development and training remain the strongest tools for companies facing rapid digital and environmental transitions.

The project delivered a comprehensive, forward‑looking analysis of how postal work will evolve over the next decade, covering four core operational areas:
· Post Office Networks
· Call Centres and Customer Care
· Sorting Centres
· Delivery of Postal Items

Using a hybrid methodology — from desk research and machine‑learning forecasting to interactive seminars supported by a GenAI‑powered chatbot — the project generated a robust evidence base to anticipate future skills needs and emerging OHS risks.

A key outcome is the Training Pathways Catalogue, a practical tool designed to help postal organisations adapt and strengthen training programmes, mitigate skill shortages and ensure operational continuity in a fast‑changing environment.

The conference concluded with an inspiring show‑and‑tell by Rami El Hachem (DHL Supply Chain) and a roundtable discussion on preparing people and organisations for the future of work.

On 8/9 April An Post hosted the first meeting of the PostEurop Performance OPS & Ops Data Working Group in Dublin this year.

It is of utmost importance (for this group) to keep EU and non-EU members of PostEurop informed about the latest developments on the ongoing and upcoming changes in customs in various countries around the world as well as changes in the UPU and IPC environment and the impact on inbound and outbound (postal) operations.

It allows members to share best practice as well as the latest information that is available to understand, ask questions and bridge any knowledge gaps to ensure a smooth implementation of any upcoming changes.

There were two intensive days covering many topics regarding the member`s service performance and operations and data exchange, provided by groups, by partners UPU and IPC, and directly from members sharing their best practice experience. Two days of open and active discussion and communication on how to provide better services to the customers.

Throughout these two days, the agenda brought together a rich sequence of updates, expert insights and practical exchanges — from UPU POC SG, PRIME and EMS developments to deeper dives into tracked services, performance results and An Post’s own operational practices. Members discussed ICS2 Release 3, emerging e-commerce rules, U.S. de minimis changes and the ongoing reforms to the Union Customs Code, alongside national handling fee experiences and updates from IPC and UPU PTC on DDP, EAD transport and PDDP. The meeting also explored EDI compliance, paperless dispatch progress, and operational innovation from Slovenia Post, complemented by a site visit to the Mail Center and valuable opportunities for networking and collaborative problem‑solving.

On 17–18 February, PostEurop Members met at the Royal Mail Mail Mount Pleasant Mail Centre in London for the Health & Work Safety Working Group meeting — two days dedicated to safety, wellbeing, and the future of our workforce across the postal sector.

The programme included visits to the Mount Pleasant Mail Centre and the Postal Museum, followed by a full day of discussions on key strategic topics such as:

• Building a next‑generation, agile workforce.
• Supporting an ageing workforce and promoting wellbeing.
• How internal social initiatives like the Rowland Hill Fund support employees.
• Lost Time Frequency Rate 2025: Each meeting provides an opportunity to share these figures and build an insightful benchmark.
• Policy reflections on senior workers, presented by bpost.
• Open round‑table discussions on future health & safety pathways.

This meeting was an important opportunity to exchange best practices, reflect on emerging challenges, and continue strengthening safe, healthy and sustainable working environments for the postal industry across Europe. And as we work together to build these environments, it’s worth remembering that wellbeing often starts with simple human moments — noticing when a colleague might be struggling and showing we care enough to ask how they’re really doing can make a difference.

A stimulating exchange at yesterday’s Euractiv Transport policy event on hashtag , bringing together the Commission, Parliament and industry to discuss what lies ahead for Europe’s clean transport transition.

Representing the postal sector, Elena Fernandez-Rodríguez underlined our decade-long pioneering spirit in sustainable mobility. Today, PostEurop members operate one of Europe’s largest low-emission delivery fleets — more than 109,000 electric vehicles, 14,000 alternative-fuel vehicles, 77% renewable electricity use, thousands of vehicles and not forgetting the postmen/postwomen delivering on foot — illustrating our firm commitment to decarbonisation.

Elena stressed that achieving Europe’s transport objectives requires the right enabling conditions. In particular:
⚡ a fit-for-purpose, renewable-powered grid to support large-scale electrification;
⚡ affordable EVs and battery production to keep the transition competitive;
⛽ continued exploration of emerging fuels and technologies where they genuinely add value;
📈 flexibility and balance approach in policy design to ensure that all actors — including SMEs — can keep pace with new requirements.

Key takeaways from the wider discussions:
• Europe faces a decline in EV uptake in some regions, driven by affordability and slow market conditions.
• Industry competitiveness and decarbonisation must progress hand-in-hand.
• Rail capacity, charging standards, and clean corridors are seen as major levers for progress.
• A stronger focus on battery manufacturing, grid readiness and alternative fuels will be essential in the coming years. We look forward to the Commission’s Grid Package for larger vehicles.
• Policymakers emphasised the need to consider Europe’s broader electricity demand beyond transport.

A valuable reminder that ambitious climate targets must be matched with practical support and coordinated action — and that our sector stands ready to continue supporting Europe’s sustainable mobility journey.
