In 2012 we started mobilizing farmers in Uganda to plant . We mobilized 6,500 farmers and could distribute seedlings to 2,000 farmers before we ran out of money. Raising became very difficult but we knew where we were heading. We interacted with experts globally including doing research on high yielding varieties with the Cocoa Research Center of the University of West Indies in Trinidad. Since Cocoa takes long to fruit, some farmers lost hope and cut their Cocoa trees. They refused to follow our expert advice. The rest of the farmers who were resilient are now laughing all the way to the bank. They harvest mostly around 500 kg per acre and with Cocoa prices at about $8 to $10 kg, indeed 😀 money can be harvested from trees. If you're a farmer in Uganda, or an agripreneur, know this, Asante Mama has the only private gene bank in Uganda and you need to come buy your seedlings. Cocoa prices will stay high and for next 30 to 40 years, you too can harvest from trees.
