Let’s face it: some foods just don’t agree with our bodies.
Despite their fulsome flavor, even the most delicious and delectable foods can negatively impact our health if we aren’t careful.
These undesirable reactions occur for different reasons, whether it’s due to an allergy, intolerance, or sensitivity. So let’s break them down into bite-sized pieces and see what we can digest!
Allergy — A food allergy affects our immune system. Even a tiny amount of the offending food can trigger various symptoms, ranging from moderate to life-threatening. Because symptoms appear almost immediately, food allergies are easy to detect.
Intolerance — While a food intolerance may be uncomfortable, it is not life-threatening. The symptoms are mainly digestive and occur when we ingest more of a particular food or nutrient than our body can properly break down and digest. Lactose intolerance is a typical example.
Sensitivity — Food sensitivity is the hardest to detect because other health conditions can explain the symptoms. Food sensitivity symptoms may include migraine headaches, brain fog, arthritis and joint pain, and digestive issues such as gas and bloating.
