🩺 Hernia surgery

🥼 Dr. Bernard Boussauw went to Equitom Lummen to perform a specialised hernia surgery, working alongside Dr. Mathieu Foucaud. A collaboration focused on sharing expertise in equine surgery.

👉🏻 This hernia was repaired using a prosthetic mesh. The advantage of this technique is that it gives more support to the hernia. The disadvantage is that a foreign body is implanted with the risk of rejection and infection.

🩺 ‘Smart surgery’ technique by Dr. Bernard Boussauw

In this case, a sarcoid located on the abdomen was surgically removed by Dr. Bernard Boussauw using the ‘smart surgery’ technique. Isolating the tumor and partially closing the surgical margins before excision of the tumor reduces the risk for recurrence significantly.

🩺 Fistulectomy

Following surgery for a major wound, this horse developed a post-operative fistula. To fully understand the underlying structures and determine the extent of the tract, a CT scan was first performed. Based on these findings, surgical removal of the fistula tract was carried out to support proper healing.

This procedure was performed by Michael Meulyzer and Louis De Langhe as a collaboration between the surgical teams of Bosdreef and De Morette, both part of Equine Care Group.
