SHAPING THE FUTURE OF DIGITAL HEALTH EDUCATION

Contribute to a global study on training needs in primary care

The WONCA Working Party on eHealth, in collaboration with the Global Digital Health Unit at Imperial College London, invites primary care professionals to participate in an international research project exploring digital health training needs.

The integration of digital technologies into primary care presents both opportunities and challenges. As general practitioners and family doctors adapt to increasingly digital healthcare systems, there is a growing need to ensure that training - at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels - is relevant, accessible and effective.

This project seeks to understand where the gaps are and how education and training programmes can better prepare primary care professionals for digital practice. Insights gathered will inform future educational initiatives and policy recommendations.

Participants may choose to take part in either a 60-minute online focus group or a one-to-one interview (30–60 minutes). Sessions will be held via Zoom or Microsoft Teams, recorded for transcription purposes, and securely managed by Imperial College London.

Available Focus Group Dates:
Thursday 31 July or Tuesday 5 August

5:00 PM (BST – London)
12:00 PM (EDT – New York, Toronto)
6:00 PM (CEST – Central Europe)

Sign up now to contribute your perspective to this important initiative.

Family doctors around the world are invited to join us for a special round table webinar exploring how integrative approaches can support patients living with chronic pain.

✔️ Traditional Chinese Medicine
✔️ Homeopathy
✔️ Lifestyle and mind-body therapies
✔️ Ayurvedic medicine
…and more.

🌿 How can volunteering in community gardens support cancer recovery?

Watch the recording of our latest SPACE Project webinar to find out!

On 22 July, we brought together experts from across Europe to discuss how social prescribing—connecting patients with non-medical community activities—can help people recovering from cancer regain strength, confidence, and connection.

Speakers from Spain, Italy, and the UK shared early findings from the SPACE Project, a three-year initiative co-funded by the EU Erasmus+ Programme. The webinar explored how volunteering in green spaces like urban gardens can boost mental well-being, reduce isolation, and empower people to move from patient to active contributor.

We also shared results from the SPACE survey, next steps for pilot programmes, and the role of primary care professionals in supporting this holistic, person-centred approach to rehabilitation.

Whether you’re a healthcare worker, community organiser, or just curious about social prescribing, this webinar offers great insights into an emerging model of care.

🦻 A simple tool to support hearing care in primary care

Hearing loss often goes undetected – especially in busy clinical settings. The hearWHO app from the World Health Organization (WHO) is a free, evidence-based hearing screening tool you can use to support early detection.

🔊 Uses validated digits-in-noise technology
👂 Suitable for use in community screening
🎧 Particularly useful for older adults, people exposed to loud noise, and personal audio device users

The app can be used directly by patients or by health workers as a quick hearing screener. Results are clearly displayed, and those who fail can be referred for further testing.

The 14th EURIPA Rural Health Forum brought together 118 participants from 24 countries in Wittenberg, Germany, to explore how rural communities can better meet healthcare and wellbeing needs. EURIPA – the European Rural and Isolated Practitioners Association – is a WONCA Europe network dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of rural communities across Europe. Held from 26–28 June 2025, the Forum opened with speeches from national and academic leaders, including Secretary of State, Mr Wolfgang Beck, and Professor Dr Heike Kielstein, Dean of Medicine at Martin Luther University.

The programme featured a strong line-up of keynotes, including Prof Karen Flegg (WONCA President), Prof Russell Roberts (Australia), Prof Kerstin Hämel (Austria), and Prof Andrée Rochfort (Ireland). Sessions ranged from rural workforce innovations to One Health, research translation, and global rural care. The event also introduced new formats such as a “One Slide, Five Minutes” session and a dynamic online discussion on intergenerational perspectives in family medicine.

The Forum concluded with the presentation of the Wittenberg Statement – a call to advance a “rural reformation” in European healthcare through policy, education, and community-led solutions. The next EURIPA Forum will take place in Cartagena, Spain, from 1–3 October 2026.

FEATURED DOCTOR: AMBER WHEATLEY

What is it like to be a family doctor in a place where patients arrive by boat or plane, and the hospital is a sea crossing away?

Dr Amber Wheatley offers a candid and colourful glimpse into island medicine in the British Virgin Islands, where she practises across remote islands under the Caribbean sun.

In this interview, she talks about the joys and challenges of serving her home community, her leadership roles with WONCA’s rural and women’s working groups, the home remedies she grew up with, yoga headstands and more.
