We’re excited to share that as of May 1, 2025, NorthStar Dementia has officially merged with Dementia Bermuda. This transition marks an important step forward in our shared mission to provide comprehensive, community-based dementia care for individuals and families across the island.

All of NorthStar’s programmes—In-Home OT Services, Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST), Caregiver Education, and more—are now operating under Dementia Bermuda, a registered nonprofit dedicated to improving the quality of life for those affected by dementia through care, education, and advocacy.

✨ What this means for you:
We’re still here. The same people, the same services—just with a stronger foundation, broader reach, and greater sustainability.

Today marks a significant step forward for Dementia Care Services on island, as we announce the merger of NorthStar Dementia with Dementia Bermuda, creating a single unified non-profit entity. By combining our strengths, services and expertise, the merged organisation can now offer Bermuda’s first and only comprehensive, community-based dementia care model — making it easier for individuals and families to access the support they need, when they need it most.

As the newly appointed Clinical Director of Dementia Bermuda, I want to express my deepest gratitude and admiration to NorthStar's clinical team , whose dedicated hard work has made this moment possible. I’m also thankful to the Board for their unwavering support and belief in our shared vision for the future.

The future of dementia care in Bermuda has never looked brighter, and I’m so excited for what lies ahead.

The Dementia Care Services Pilot Programme, launched by the Ministry of Youth, Social Development and Seniors in October 2023, was designed to provide navigation and support services for individuals living with dementia who are uninsured or underinsured.

By December 2024, the programme had served 111 individuals and their caregivers, revealing key challenges such as gaps in funding, lack of formal diagnoses, and high caregiver stress levels. The Government has since extended and expanded dementia-related initiatives, reinforcing its commitment to improving long-term care solutions in Bermuda.

Caring for a loved one with dementia comes with many challenges, but the right support can make a difference. Findings from the Dementia Care Services Pilot Programme confirm the need for continued investment in these critical services.

🚨Bermuda’s hospital is in crisis. A critical alert has been issued due to bed shortages, with many patients unable to be discharged.

While today’s article does not specify the medical conditions of those unable to be discharged, we know that many individuals living with dementia and their families struggle to access the support needed to keep loved ones at home safely.

This is not just a capacity issue—it’s a reflection of a system struggling to provide adequate support for aging populations and their caregivers. With:
- No standardised dementia care pathway
- Limited access to in-home support
- Long waitlists at care homes
…families are being pushed beyond their limits, and our only hospital is bearing the burden.

The solution is not more beds—it’s more support for aging safely in place. We need systemic change to ensure individuals with dementia can receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time.

is working to bridge these critical gaps, but we cannot do this alone. We need collaborative solutions, policy changes and investment in community-based dementia care to ease the burden on families and the healthcare system alike.

💡 Bermuda needs a National Dementia Plan—one that prioritises proactive care over crisis management.
