Vegetarians Are 33% More Likely to Fracture A Bone:
A recent study involving over 26,000 women found that vegetarians are 33% more likely to experience hip fractures compared to meat-eaters.
The increased risk may be due to lower levels of key nutrients for bone and muscle health, such as calcium and protein, which are more abundant in animal products.
While vegetarian diets can be healthy, they must be carefully balanced to ensure adequate nutrient intake, just like diets that include meat.
The study also highlighted that vegetarians tend to have a slightly lower body mass index (BMI) than meat-eaters, which could further explain the higher risk of fractures.
Lower BMI can be linked to being underweight, which is associated with poorer bone health. Despite this increased fracture risk, vegetarian diets have been shown to reduce the risk of chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease, making them a popular choice for health and environmental reasons.
Balancing nutrient intake is essential for maintaining bone health while benefiting from the other advantages of a plant-based diet.
