Cervical dilation and labor patterns vary widely. What may be labeled as “slow” or “stalled” can often be a normal pause, a response to environment, baby’s positioning, or the body needing time to adjust.
Labor is driven by a delicate hormonal balance primarily oxytocin, the hormone responsible for contractions, and endorphins, which help the body cope with pain. When this balance is disrupted, labor can slow or stall.
In clinical (medical) settings, several factors can interfere with this process (noise, interruptions, vaginal examinations, continuous bed rest, admission to hospital too early).
When we shift the language, we shift the care from urgency and intervention to curiosity and support.
Birth is not a performance, and it doesn’t follow a strict timeline. It deserves patience, respect, and individualized understanding.
