It is the belief of most parents that children are eating a relatively healthy diet, but if not, they throw up their hands and give up.
Healthy eating is essential for your child's good health, growth and development. Healthy eating in childhood means they will have less chance of developing chronic diseases like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and some cancers. It will also mean they feel better and enjoy life more.
To stay healthy and maintain a healthy weight, they should have:
* at least 5 portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables every day
* meals based on starchy foods such as potatoes, bread, pasta and rice (choose wholegrain varieties when possible)
* some milk and dairy products (choose low-fat options where you can)
* some foods that are good sources of protein, such as meat, fish, eggs, beans and lentils
Make sure that your child doesn't eat too many sugary or fatty foods, such as sweets, cakes and biscuits, or drink too many sugary fizzy drinks.
