Since our start up, we have been catering the waste collection and cleaning of the international offices as well as the commercial hubs. However, after we were contracted by Thimphu Thromdey for the waste collection of the Northern Zone since 2016, we have been fostering the collection of recyclable waste through our core activity of collecting municipal waste from the households under Northern Th
imphu Thromdey. Clean City is not only into collecting the waste from the households, but we are equally concerned towards the effects created to the environment due to tones of waste generated everyday and tons of recyclable waste still going into the landfill. We aim to promote the concept of 5R's ( Reuse, Reduce, Recycle, Refuse and Responsibility) as well as to promote one pillar of GNH " Conservation of our Environment" of our country. There has been an alarming increase in secretion of tons of solid waste every day and it is affecting the environment at large. Whereby, as Clean City " We believe in the power of Green" have adapted in green habits and have been encouraging the society in a small way by coming up with a paper recycling plant in Chamgang, under Thimphu Dzongkhag and also educating the younger generation on being responsive on recycling habits such as collection of recyclable waste especially plastic bottles, card boards and many more. We have been buying the recyclable products from schools since 2016 and further encouraging them in recycling. Our country needs to go long way in terms of social behavioural change, developing sanitation infrastructure and improving waste management practices. In this context we the Clean City have come forward to initiate the collection of the waste (DRY & WET WASTE). Growth in population and change in lifestyles has led to increase in waste generation. Municipal solid waste includes residential and commercial wastes generated in city areas in either solid or semi-solid form including bio-medical wastes. Safe and cost-effective management of municipal solid waste is a significant social, environmental and health challenge for modern society. Northern zone of Thimphu alone generates more than 5000 tonnes of solid waste a year. It is estimated that up to 20 per cent of municipal waste in Thimphu Thromde vicinity remains uncollected. Since we do not have any processing facilities, we dump the municipal waste in the landfill. Lack of storage and collection facilities, segregation of waste, pollution and contamination due to dumping of garbage on roads, open transportation in trucks, space constraints with landfills, social and environmental issues associated with landfills and lack of reusable and recyclables are the key issues in solid waste management. Considering the social, environmental and health impact of waste management and sanitation, Thimphu Thromde is wise enough to source out the collection of the waste to the private individuals so that we make best out of it.
