12.11.25 - Happy World Pneumonia Day

Pneumonia remains one of the world’s leading infectious killers. It still claims more lives of children under five than any other infectious disease, and also poses a serious threat to older people and those with chronic health conditions, particularly in low-and middle-income countries.

Protecting children and communities from pneumonia means strengthening health systems – so that preventive measures reach everyone, and every person with symptoms can get rapid diagnosis and the right treatment, including antibiotics and medical oxygen when needed.

2nd Pediatric Basic Ultrasound Course

The Second Pediatric Basic Ultrasound Training was successfully conducted from 24th-27th September, 2025 at the National Referral Hospital to strengthen point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) competency among pediatric healthcare providers and sonographers in Bhutan. The course was organized jointly by the Department of Pediatrics, JDWNRH, the Department of Clinical Services (DCS), and the National Medical Services (NMS) in close collaboration with international experts from International Pediatric Ultrasound Network (IPUN), German Tropical Pediatrics (GTP), Germany and Dhulikhel Hospital, Nepal.

The opening ceremony was graced by Dr Pem Namgyel, the President of JDWNRH and Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan (KGUMSB), along with the Director and Medical Superintendent of JDWNRH. The president highlighted the importance of POCUS in pediatric practice and commended the joint effort to bring global expertise to Bhutan.

More than 20 health workers, including Pediatricians, Residents, Emergency Physicians, Medical Officers, and Radio sonographers from across the country attended the 4 day course.
The course content was designed to introduce basic pediatric ultrasound techniques relevant to neonatal and pediatric care, with a focus on thoracic, abdominal, brain, vascular, and basic cardiac ultrasound. The teaching methodology combined interactive lectures, live demonstrations, and extensive hands-on practice on pediatric and neonatal patients under expert supervision. Participants were evaluated through pre- and post-tests, alongside structured OSCEs, to measure knowledge gain and skill acquisition.

The closing ceremony was graced by the Medical Superintendent of JDWNRH and joined by the President of NMS, Dr Mimi Lhamu as a special guest. The President highlighted the critical role of POCUS in improving pediatric healthcare in Bhutan and proposed extending this collaboration to offer advanced pediatric ultrasound and echocardiography courses in the future. Certificates of participation were awarded to all trainees, and certificates of appreciation were presented to the international and national instructors in recognition of their contributions.

A Plea for Compassion: Help 16-Year-Old Sonam Get a Second Chance at Life

In the quiet village of Pelrithang, Gelephu Gewog under Sarpang Dzongkhag, a young boy’s life hangs in the balance. Sonam, a 16-year-old student with a kind heart and quiet dreams, has been diagnosed with end-stage renal disease. Since February 2024, his days have been marked not by the joys of youth, but by hospital visits, dialysis sessions, and the growing uncertainty of what tomorrow might bring.

Sonam's condition is critical. According to his treating physician, a kidney transplant is the only definitive treatment that can save his life. However, despite exhaustive efforts, there is no compatible donor in his family or immediate circle. This devastating reality has brought his loved ones to a difficult and humbling place—reaching out to the general public in hopes of finding a compassionate soul willing to help.

A Life Waiting to be Lived

At just 16 years old, Sonam should be enjoying school, playing with friends, and dreaming about his future. Instead, his young life has been overshadowed by a battle no child should have to face. Yet, in the midst of hardship, Sonam remains hopeful. His spirit has not given up, and neither have those who care for him.

The Bhutan Kidney Foundation has assessed Sonam’s case and confirmed that there are no potential kidney donors available from his side. With this in mind, they are appealing to the nation—to kind-hearted individuals who may be willing to give a part of themselves to save a young life.

Sonam’s blood group is A+ve. Eligible donors must be between 21–60 years old and have a blood group of A+ve or O+ve. If you or someone you know meets these criteria, you could be the miracle that Sonam and his family so desperately pray for.

No act of kindness is ever too small. But offering the gift of life is a compassion beyond measure. We urge the media, civil society, and individuals across the country to help spread the word—because the more people who know, the greater the chance we find the angel Sonam is waiting for.
