Let’s talk about the conversations we don’t always have… but really need to.
On the 20th of March 2026, Botswana Family Welfare Association (BOFWA) hosted a powerful intergenerational dialogue at the kgotla in Gaborone West as part of the Month of Youth Against HIV/AIDS.
The session focused on sensitization on human rights, stigma, and discrimination, creating a space for honest and meaningful engagement.
This was more than just a meeting. It was a real conversation between community leaders and adolescents and young people, asking an important question
How can we better support and include you
From discussions on HIV and AIDS, stigma, and discrimination, to the importance of youth involvement in decision making, one message stood out clearly
Nothing for us without us
Kgosi A Somolekae set the tone with a powerful reminder that the kgotla must be a safe and welcoming space for all. He emphasized that young people should come as they are without fear of judgment, especially when seeking help. He challenged strict norms that may prevent people from accessing support and even highlighted the importance of making condoms accessible in community spaces.
Following his remarks, young people felt more at ease to speak openly. Many shared that they had initially wondered how they would express themselves in such a setting, but appreciated how welcoming and open the space became, allowing them to speak freely and honestly.
Community leaders also shared openly with young people, encouraging them to invite elders into their spaces, communicate how they would like to be treated instead of leaving room for assumptions, and not be afraid to show up where leaders are present. Youth voices were equally strong, calling for greater inclusion in leadership, safe spaces to speak openly, and more accessible health services and information.
We also appreciate the presence and support of Councillor Melanie Nicol, alongside other community leaders, for standing with young people in shaping a healthier and more inclusive future.
Together, we are breaking barriers, challenging stigma, and transforming the HIV and AIDS response one conversation at a time
