It’s crucial for all of us to reflect deeply on Hon. Lesego Chombo's words and what they mean to us as individuals. Addressing deeply personal issues like gender-based violence (GBV) cannot be tackled solely at the societal or policy level. To truly combat GBV, we must start by examining our own core beliefs.

❓ How do I personally feel about GBV?
❓ Have I ever experienced it, or do I know someone who has?
❓ What would I say to a loved one who has thoughts of harming their partner?
❓ Do I feel there’s a stigma attached to being a victim that would make it hard for me to speak out?
❓ Where do I get the mindset that “if he beats me and apologizes, it means he won’t do it again”?
❓ Why do I believe he’ll change?
❓ What did I experience growing up that shaped this belief?

Ending GBV is complex and requires multifaceted approaches. This includes creating employment opportunities to reduce financial dependency, running awareness campaigns, organizing community dialogues, and funding organizations working to combat GBV.

However, real change begins with me and you, challenging our beliefs, attitudes, and actions. Let’s take that first step.

Heartbreak: Let’s End GBV in Botswana

This is heartbreaking and the painful part is that behind these horrifying numbers are real people who have faced unimaginable pain, fear, and loss.

These acts of violence remind us that GBV is not just a statistic; it’s a crisis affecting our sisters, mothers, brothers, and children. For survivors, the scars, both physical and emotional run deep. A SURVIVOR OUT THERE IS ON DAY ONE OF A LIFE LONG TRAUMA.

As Batswana, let's take a stand:

1. Speak Out: Report GBV and support survivors to seek help. Silence enables violence.

2. Raise Awareness: Talk about GBV in your homes, workplaces, and communities.

3. Support Survivors: Offer kindness, empathy, and resources to those affected.

4. Challenge Harmful Norms: Teach our boys and girls the value of respect, consent, and equality.

If you or someone you know is affected by GBV, reach out to Tsalwa Sesha Mental Health Services for support. Healing is possible, and you don’t have to face it alone.
