Another small step in the right direction to make it easier to attract more doctors to our region. Hopefully, changes like these will help with physician recruitment that would allow the Emergency Department at Soldiers Memorial to return to 24/7 service and the Urgent Treatment Centre in Annapolis Royal to expand its hours of operation.

While extra certification is being waived, it does not mean that those doctors do not have their credentials scrutinized before being allowed to practice in Nova Scotia.

Nova Scotia is the first province in the country to allow American board-certified physicians to practice in Nova Scotia without extra certification.

Full licences will also be available to international subspecialists without extra certification, including physicians practising internal medicine.

The College of Physicians and Surgeons says it is making every effort to welcome more physicians who are competent to deliver safe care to Nova Scotians.

Just a heads up that even though the Emergency Department at Soldiers Memorial is closed most of March, there will still be access to the Mobile Primary Care Clinics this month.

These clinics are helpful for those currently without primary healthcare providers, but they do not make up in any way for us not having access to emergency department services anywhere in Annapolis County.

Extremely unfortunate news that the Soldiers Memorial Hospital Emergency Department will be closed until March 15th. This underscores why it is so critically important that we don't let the pressure off on our goal of ensuring 24/7 emergency department services at Soldiers Memorial Hospital.

Please note that the Digby Emergency Department is also currently closed, expecting to reopen tomorrow, March 4th.

From yesterday's public meeting about Soldier's Memorial Hospital:
Tanya Nixon, vice-president of operations for the western zone, said the large number of people in the area without a family doctor and a variety of other factors, including patient volume and proximity to regional hospitals, goes into the approach they're using in Middleton.

"There's a great deal of people in this community that are unattached and they need a ready access point," she said in an interview.

"The physicians in this area are committed to an emergency room and if we can augment from a recruitment perspective, that model makes the most sense to us."

Did you attend any of the three sessions offered? If you did, share your thoughts about the sessions in the comments.

Nova Scotia Health officials say recruitment efforts continue to try to restore full-time service to the emergency department at Soldiers Memorial Hospital in Middleton, N.S.
