If you want to know how much you WEIGH, use a scale. Just note that scales cannot differentiate between water, muscle, bone or other tissue mass. They are essentially useless for determining size loss. đ¤ˇââď¸
But if you want to know how much FAT youâve lost, use the String Test!
In the Balance Factor program, everyone measures progress with the String Test: a simple height to waist measurement developed by Dr. Margaret Ashwell. The String Test is also one of the Outcome Indicators - 1 of 6 components, such as Roadblocks, Mindsets and Identities (as mentioned in last weekâs posts) - to choose from in the Balance Factor Playbook. Remember, Outcome Indicators help you measure, specifically, the fat burning progress and not the very generic âweight lossâ we think is progress!
Dr. Ashwellâs String Test can be used monthly to track fat loss progress by marking where the string overlaps with itself at the waist (or bust, hips, thigh, etc.) Marking the point where it overlaps each month, lets you SEE the fat loss and celebrate the true progress you are making!
To create your own String Test, get some thick string (preferably white so you can easily see your markings) and measure your height with it. Mark your height on the string, and then add about 2 more feet of string past the height marking. Then fold the string in half from the top of your height marking to the end of it and tape it together. You should have a doubled up string plus extra to wrap around your waist. If you can get the â1/2 your heightâ piece all the way around your waist, your risk of chronic disease is pretty low! If you canât, then mark where the folded end overlaps with the extra string. Now you can measure your progress each month as the folded end comes closer to the tape! Itâs easier than it sounds but check out the video below for a visual how-to!

The String Test: Are you Overweight?
Our BFF, B, is holding up her string to show off the progress sheâs made from July to November 2022! The string around her waist has come in by 3.5 inches since July!
