Motivation is what drives us to make decisions, especially when looking at healthy living. Motivation helps us choose how we want to live. Are we exercising because we enjoy it? Are we exercising to improve our health? Do we play sports for fun or the possibility of medals and awards?

Knowing the type of motivation driving us can help to maintain our progress towards goals. Those with an intrinsic motivation approach are more likely to maintain habits and achieve goals. Those with an extrinsic motivation approach can still do so but may find it harder to remain consistent.

A high level of sedentary behaviour can negatively impact health no matter your body weight, diet, and physical activity. In a 2009 study, Canadian adults that spent most of their time sitting were 50% more at risk of death than those that sit less, even after controlling for age, smoking, and physical activity levels.

It is important to minimize passive sedentary behaviours throughout the day as much as possible. Even small increases in activity levels and energy usage can improve our health. Minimizing passive sedentary behaviours is a great way to begin without having to work about major lifestyle changes.

Start with a small change such as switching from 3 hours of television to 2.5 hours and go from there. Try a new hobby during that time. Or go for a walk. Or read a book. Or whatever makes you happy

When we discuss the benefits of movement, the physical benefits are often the most popular. These physical benefits may be the most well-known benefits to health, but they are just a few examples. Our mental, social and emotional health is just as important. The mental, social and emotional benefits are the ones that are typically overlooked. Which is why it is important to highlight their influence on our life and our overall health.

It is also important to remind ourselves that movement is not just how much we can lift at the gym. The beauty of movement is that there are so many forms of movement. It doesn’t have to be in a gym setting. Going for a walk around the neighbourhood can be just as beneficial to your health as spending an hour in the gym lifting weights simply. Finding the movement you love allows you to target each aspect of health while achieving each of these benefits.
