Registration for my Spring session of Spin and Strength closes this week!

If you’ve been wanting to try a spin class but have been intimidated this if for you! This class is a blast, 20-30 minutes of spin followed by full body strengthening, core and mobility. A very effective and efficient way to exercise that hits it all.

Class is at the Beaumont Sport and Rec Center.

Happy Monday!

There’s lots of new faces here so I thought I’d introduce myself!

Hi, I’m Kristin!

Mama to 3 kids ages 3,4,6 and wife to my husband Wyatt. We’ve lived in Beaumont, AB for the past 5 years and absolutely love this community! You can often find us in the neighbourhood going for a family walk/scoot/ride with our dog Zoe!

A bit about me:

I have an Athletic and Exercise Therapy Degree from Camosun College in Victoria, BC. I transferred to this program after my Kinesiology Diploma at RDC! I absolutely loved my 3 years going to school and living in Victoria.

I work as an Exercise Specialist at the Edmonton West Primary Care Network 3 days/week. In this role, I support patients of our family docs with weight management, chronic disease management, injury rehab, and chronic pain management through exercise/movement.

In May of this year I started teaching strength based group exercise classes for women in Beaumont again! I love meeting other Moms/Women, spending time outside and exercising so this is a win, win, win for me!

You can sometimes find me at the Beaumont Sport and Rec Center subbing a fitness class, teaching workshops and working 1 on 1 with clients.

I have a deep love of movement/exercise. As a kid I was always moving and as someone who can struggle with some anxiety moving my body is imperative to my overall contentment.

I love being on the go, busy and productive, rest is difficult for me- something I’m working on!

My husband worked shift work for 9 years and recently transitioned to a day shift role and we are loving it!

I don’t like road trips very much because I don’t like sitting still.

I love learning new things! I’m a podcast ju**ie and also love reading.

Much to my surprise I like Viking shows!

Something important I’m learning is that when I take good care of myself (mentally, physically, emotionally) my whole family benefits. I can show up as my best self if I’m not depleted.

I am very passionate about helping folks optimize their health through movement.

A recent meta analysis showed that even 2 minutes of walking after a meal yielded a significant decrease in blood sugar levels compared to those who did no movement.

Maybe you don’t have time for an hour workout 5 days/week but do you have time for a 10-20 minute walk most days?

If you don’t have time for a 10-15 minute walk can you do a couple extra flights of stairs?

If you work from home can you stand up and walk for 1-2 minutes in between meetings/calls.

If you can’t walk in between calls can you do some work from standing?

Can you do a few glute bridges or bird dogs while your baby is playing on the floor?

Instead of going out for meals with friends could you meet for a walk instead? Or eat first and then walk?

It’s not a flashy or sexy message but doing the little things consistently has a profound impact on our happiness, health and life.

When you want to go big, go small.

One of the greatest benefits of consistent strength training?

Improved Functional Capacity.

Everything we do in our day requires an amount of physical effort.

The physical effort required can range from:

Low: sitting, driving, working
Medium: laundry, vacuuming, gardening, walking
High: carrying something heavy up the stairs, running after your toddler, picking up heavy items from the ground

Or in the case of this video, carrying your 3 year old the rest of the way home because they are a typical 3rd child and have decided they no longer want to scooter 🤣

When we consistently strength train in a progressive way our tissues (muscles, bones, ligaments, tendons) adapt, get stronger and their capacity increases.

This increased tissue capacity translates to an overall increased global functional capacity that allows us to do physical tasks with less “effort.” Those tasks that felt exhausting prior to strength training or maybe led to unwanted symptoms (back pain, extreme fatigue, pelvic symptoms) don’t anymore because the physical tasks are no longer depleting or exceeding our bodies functional capacity.

The physical demands of life, especially early motherhood can be high. To prevent injury, decrease fatigue and improve quality of life strength training is key!

When you train hard, life is easier.

I’ve had quite the influx of messages the past 24 hours and am doing my best to keep up! Thank you for all the interest in the exercise classes! It truly is one of my favourite things to do!!

Beyond excited to be bringing this workshop to Beaumont. All are welcome whether you are 6 weeks or 6 years postpartum. Can’t wait to share this passion project with you all! If we take really good care of Moms the whole world benefits ❤️❤️

Calling all new moms! Join Kristin Dogterom, CEP on April 29 from 9:30 - 11 a.m. to learn how you can safely return to exercise postpartum.

This 1.5 hour course will cover all things postpartum, including tissue recovery, pelvic health, core restoration, injury prevention, and more. This course will feature an interactive full-body exercise routine that focuses on core/pelvic floor connection.

Participants will leave the course with a printout of the exercise program to continue independently. Bonus - this is a great way to meet other moms in the community!

Hello everyone!

My first post back in 1.5 years.. I’ve missed you all!

When I decided to pause my work here for Kristin Dogterom Health and Wellness I was transitioning back to my role at the Primary Care Network as an Exercise Specialist (part time). I took my time getting adjusted to our new normal and had to put pause on this space and put some ideas and dreams on hold.

Over the past few months I’ve felt some capacity returning.. Yay! I am really excited to let you know what I have been working on!! Stay tuned!!

September has felt intense, all consuming and to be honest quite rocky for me. ⁣

On a micro level in the month of September one of my children started kindergarten (5 mornings a week school), another child started preschool (2 mornings a week school), all 3 of my kids have been transitioning to one full day of day home/week, we started our first extra curricular activity (hockey) and I’ve been preparing for my return to work after being away for an extended maternity leave (nearly 3 years) this Friday (Oct 1) all within the uncertainty of COVID. ⁣

After 3 ish years of being home primarily and only having one child in part time school.. all of these changes have been a lot for me to process. ⁣

Also on a macro level the world has been on fire. Stress. Anxiety. Fear. Anger. Disappointment. Othering. Polarizing. Politics. Divisiveness.. it’s been a lot for me to take in as I’m sure it has been for many of you. ⁣

Initially I didn’t think I would offer any classes in October. I wanted to give myself space as we all adjust with my return to outside the home work. But as I have reflected back on when I’ve felt most at peace over the past month it’s been during:⁣

- Quality time with my husband⁣
- Moving my body⁣
- Talking with close friends/family⁣
- Intentional time with my kids⁣
- Teaching exercise classes ⁣
- Seeing my therapist ⁣

I’m scaling back to one class but I’m excited to announce we are going to take advantage of this beautiful fall weather and keep it going outside as long as we can! ⁣

Hey friends!!! ⁣

How are you all doing?? I’ve posted very minimally on here over the past few months and am feeling mostly refreshed and ready to re-connect more intentionally this fall!⁣

The majority of our summer was spent out in Nature, throughly breaking in our trailer. Our camping adventures had us exploring all around Alberta and even into Saskatchewan and British Columbia. ⁣

This summer we checked out:⁣

in Fairmont, BC ⁣

All in all we have loved spending the majority of Wyatt’s days off camping. It’s a lot of work for sure, especially with a little one that wasn’t walking most of the summer and who comes with a lot of big equipment (playpen, stroller, high chair) BUT the undistracted built in family time, that comes with camping filled all of our buckets. ⁣

My oldest child starts Kindergarten on Monday. I have incredibly mixed feelings about this, as I’m sure many other parents do. I want to send out so much extra love and Grace to all the parents navigating school/pandemic related decisions as we enter another uncertain school year, this is hard stuff. Also, to all the educators out there we are with you and grateful for all that you have done with extra preparations for this upcoming year, thank you! ⁣

As we wrap up Summer part of me is sad, as I am every year, Summer is my most favourite! I have some anxiety regarding all the changes this Fall will bring to our family but it is balanced with hopeful anticipation of the incredible beauty, transformation and contagious energy that is Fall. ⁣

I’m so excited to announce that I will be back offering an in person option for group exercise in June!! Cue happy dance!⁣ Classes will be outdoors, socially distanced and following all AHS guidelines.

Exercise Class offerings for June

1) Tuesday’s starting June 8th (4 weeks) ⁣
In person 8:00 pm⁣
Parc Coloniale Park, Beaumont⁣
Max 9 spots⁣
Classes are 45 mins ⁣

2) Thursday’s starting June 3 (4 weeks) Virtual 10:00 am
Classes are 45 mins ⁣
Access to all recordings ⁣

Classes are scaleable to accommodate all levels of fitness as well as stages of pregnancy and postpartum recovery. ⁣

$40.00/4 classes (1 class/week)⁣
