Think about it: are there many worthwhile people or things in your life that fell into your lap with absolutely no effort and with zero difficulty?โ€จ
Many of us feel our most meaningful accomplishments, or the things weโ€™re most pleased about, were some of the most difficult and trying experiences of our lives:

โ€ข Walking the stage to graduate
โ€ข Crossing the finish line of a marathon or beating a Personal Best
โ€ข The Ta-Da moment as you present a homecooked meal with flourish
โ€ข Raising your children to be good, kind, respectful human beings
โ€ข Standing up for yourself against You Know Who
โ€จYou get the idea.โ€จ
These examples of feeling proud, accomplished, content, or aligned with your values are all areas of growth! ๐Ÿƒ

Spring is natureโ€™s way of saying: alright, your turn! Similarly, therapy appointments can be an opportunity for your turn โ€“ for growth.

In therapy, growth is tantamount.

Growth could mean learning new coping strategies, developing more balanced ways of thinking, doing things that are important to you, or showing up to your first session.

Indeed, growth can be different for each of us.

Growth takes strength.
Growth has teeth.

Spring is around the corner ๐ŸŒฑ

I tend to think of this as our behind-the-scenes season in Nova Scotia. While Spring may conjure images of flowers gently blooming, docile bunnies, and unassuming butterflies, itโ€™s all a bitโ€ฆ misleading.

Those soft pastel coloursโ€ฆ fuzzy baby animals balancing on fragile legsโ€ฆ Tender petals deftly unfolding into an impossibly perfect blossomโ€ฆ

If only it were so peaceful...

Growth is a-many splendor things, but I wouldnโ€™t say itโ€™s peaceful. And itโ€™s rarely easy.

Spring is about growth. ๐—”๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ด๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐˜„๐˜๐—ต ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ธ๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐—ด๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜.

Link your new goal with something you enjoy.
Resolved to spend more quality time with your treadmill? Already hooked on the latest Netflix show? Bundle them by allowing yourself to tune-in to your favourite show when youโ€™re on the treadmill!

Staying on track can be a delicate balance between accountability and compassion. You made it through January; did your resolutions?

It feels like January the 39th and for many of us, the enthusiasm for New Yearโ€™s Resolutions has worn off. No longer fueled by motivation, how do you keep the good stuff going? Or get back on the horse?

๐— ๐—ผ๐˜๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐˜ƒ๐˜€. ๐——๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฒ:

Motivation is the snazzy show pony, the initial spark that drives us to start a new habit or resolution.

Alas: motivation is temporary.
Enter: discipline.

Discipline is the less flashy workhorse that allows you to stick to your goals even when you donโ€™t feeeeel like it. And there will be days when you just donโ€™t feel like it.

Maintaining resolutions means having discipline
(not just motivation) to build lasting habits.

It takes about 21 days to build a habit. ๐—›๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฒโ€™๐˜€ ๐—ต๐—ผ๐˜„:

๐—ง๐—œ๐—ฃ ๐Ÿญ โ€” ๐—›๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—ถ๐˜ ๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ธ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด:

Pair your new goal with something you already do automatically. Resolved to drink more water? Already a caffeine fiend? Habit stack by drinking a glass right after your morning coffee. Thisโ€™ll help your new goal feel like a natural part of your routine.

๐—ง๐—œ๐—ฃ ๐Ÿฎ โ€” ๐—ง๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐—ธ ๐—ถ๐˜:

Youโ€™ve heard โ€œPics or it didnโ€™t happen!โ€
Well: track it or it (probably really) didnโ€™t happen.

Tracking keeps you accountable and can be done in all sorts of ways: keep a journal, try an app, enlist an accountability buddy - it doesnโ€™t have to be fancy. Some of my clients like the โ€œFinchโ€ and โ€œGritโ€ apps.
