On the scene of a cardiac arrest, where all 911 services converge, the entire call is run by Paramedics…. Who require the most education and are the lowest paid people in the room by as much as 20%. This is entirely deliberate and supported by legislation that was rushed into place years ago to keep it that way. There is absolutely zero justification for this.

PARAMEDIC STUDENTS SAVE A LIFE WHILE TRAINING

THUNDER BAY — A regular training day became a life-saving mission for Confederation College paramedic students last month.

While the students were practicing in the lab, program coordinator Rob Plummer was outside setting up for their session. Plummer was approached by a driver seeking urgent help for an unconscious passenger.

After recognizing the severity of the situation, Plummer called 9-1-1, gathered the students, grabbed equipment from the lab, and as a team, the students sprang into action.

The passenger was determined to be suffering from an apparent drug overdose. The team removed the individual from the vehicle and administered first aid. Using their training and knowledge, they identified the need for naloxone and administered it, saving the victim’s life.

“Incidents like this demonstrate the importance of real-world training and the incredible capabilities of our students,” said Plummer, in a news release. “Their response was swift, professional, and compassionate. I couldn’t be more proud of their actions.”

Reeghan Gernat, Emma Cahill, Amy Knott, Devin Richards, and Stephen Ree were the students involved in this life-saving effort.

Confederation College president Michelle Salo recently visited the students to commend them for their bravery and professionalism.

“These students exemplify the best of what our program prepares them for—helping those in need with expertise and care,” said Salo. “Their actions are a testament to the high standards of our paramedic program and their commitment to serving Thunder Bay and the surrounding region.”

Seeing someone fall through the ice can be terrifying but knowing what to do can save a life. Here are the steps to follow:

📱 Call for help from others around you and call 911
⭐ Reach or Throw, Don't Go!
✋ Reach or throw: If you can reach them safely on solid ground, extend an object such as a hockey stick, tube, sled, scarf, or broom. Throw a rope or something that floats and tell them to hold on
🧣 Once rescued, help the person get into a warm place as quickly as possible.
❗ Seek immediate medical attention after rescue.
