Start Sprouting ... Improve Health and Wellness
By: Cathy Nesbitt

Is your diet lacking in essential vitamins and nutrients? Is your food causing you to be sick and tired?

Did you know sprouts are considered nature’s super food? There are many reasons to eat them daily. Sprouts contain most vitamins, fibre and protein. They are hydrating, alkalizing, biogenic, and regenerative. In addition to all these healthful reasons to add sprouts to your life, they also contain loads of digestive enzymes. Enzymes help our body process the food we eat. The older we get, the tougher it is for our body to produce enzymes. There are up to 100 times more digestive enzymes in raw sprouts than in raw vegetables.

Did you know that cooking destroys enzymes in sprouts and vegetables? If enzymes are not in the food we eat, our body will utilize enzyme reserves from our body to digest. To slow the aging process, it is essential that we increase our intake of digestive enzymes. This is easily achievable by consuming raw sprouts every day. If enzyme activity gets too low, disease may result. Doctors will often prescribe enzyme pills for individuals experiencing digestive issues. Rather than feed the pharmaceutical companies, why not eat live food? Raw sprouts maintain a healthy body with abundant natural enzymes.

Sprouts are biogenic, meaning they are produced by living organisms or biological processes. When eating sprouts we are eating live food and the life force is transferred to our body. As a seed or bean germinates, everything is available to grow that baby sprout into a full-grown plant. Sprouts are simply baby vegetables in their prime.

Lose weight and gain energy. Sprouts are great for weight loss as they contain lots of fiber and are a complete protein. Sprouts are also zero point foods. So you can eat them guilt-free while getting healthier.

Sprouts are alkalizing. Many illnesses including cancer have been linked to excess acidity in the body. Eating sprouts helps to balance the pH in the body. Studies have also shown that mung and other types of sprouts contain exceptionally high levels of a natural cancer-fighting compound called sulforaphane (20 – 50 times more than in mature broccoli) that helps support antioxidants such as vitamin C and vitamin E.

Sprouts are regenerative and eating sprouts will keep you feeling energized. As sprouts are restorative, they will combat degenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s.

Sprouts are also hydrating. Our body requires a vast amount of water to keep running in topnotch condition. If you are thirsty, you are already starting to feel the effects of dehydration. Adding sprouts to your diet will add delicious moisture and will help keep you hydrated.

Sprouts are easily digestible. Due to the abundant enzymes, nutrients are assimilated into our body with ease. Sprouts are food for long-term health and wellness, as they can help to prevent disease. Best of all, sprouts are delicious and can be grown on the counter for pennies a day. Adding sprouts to your life adds life to your life. Start sprouting today and enjoy increased health and vitality.

2016 is International Year of Pulses. Pulses are part of the legume family and refer to the dried bean. Lentils, chickpeas, mung beans fenugreek are examples of pulses. This is the year to learn more about these nutritious, nuggets of goodness. http://iyp2016.org/ Canada is the 2nd largest producer of lentils in the world and the number 1 exporter. Canadians are not aware of the nutritional content of these magic beans. Experiment with your new found knowledge about pulses and try out a new recipe from www.pulses.org International Recipes updated daily.

In celebration of World Laughter Day, laughter ambassador Cathy Nesbitt is leading a laughter yoga session at Newmarket's Riverwalk Commons May 1.

If laughter is the best medicine, you can get your dose during the free, family-friendly event.

Everyone is welcome to join and "the more the merrier," said Nesbitt. "Come and experience the magic of laughing for no reason at all."

It is not actually yoga and no experience or equipment is required. Instead, it is laughter exercises designed to make us feel good.

There are mental and physical benefits to laughter, according to Nesbitt. Laughter requires an increased intake of oxygen so breathing is affected during moments of stress.

Also, when we're laughing, we're present in the moment and not thinking about anything else, she added.

Studies have shown that laughter boosts immune, decreases stress, and lowers blood pressure. According to The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, laughing releases endorphins (the "feel-good" chemical) and reduces anxiety.

Anxiety is something many people have experienced over the course of the pandemic, along with increased mental health issues, and according to Nesbitt, once we learn why it's important to laugh, it can be incorporated into daily life.

"This is so important because we have a mental health tsunami," she said.

Laughter gets sidelined as we age, she said, and this is an opportunity to get that feeling back.

"It's just about being like children. Super fun, no jokes, no comedy, just laughter."

At first, it may seem strange to laugh for no reason, and your brain might be saying you look ridiculous, she said, but your body will be saying thank you.

The laughter yoga concept was created in 1995 by Dr. Madan Kataria in India. With laughter clubs in more than 50 countries, it has become a global movement with certified laughter leaders in every province.

Nesbitt, a Bradford native, said she was introduced to laughter yoga in 2012 and was "hooked." She became trained in 2015 and now instructs others.

Before the pandemic hit, Nesbitt held laughing sessions at long-term care homes and continues to hold sessions online through Cathy's Laughter Club.

"Laugh on purpose, it's too important to leave to chance."

The laughter yoga session runs from 2 to 3 p.m. at Riverwalk Commons, 200 Doug Duncan Dr.

From the magazine archives - WHAT DO WORMS, SPROUTS AND LAUGHTER HAVE IN COMMON? Enjoy!

In 2002 the landfill for the Greater Toronto Area closed. Although it is the 2nd largest country in the world, Canada could not locate a site for a new landfill. Garbage was exported to the United States; almost 1000 trucks/week! Bad for the planet, bad for the people and a waste of money. This was the largest landfill site in Canada and the third largest in North America. The GTA has a population of over 6 million, about half live in multi-residential units (eg. condominiums, townhouses, etc.). Many people have few options for composting, therefore most organic matter from these buildings ends up in landfill. Vermicomposting provides the opportunity to compost indoors – a sustainable solution to manage organic matter (food scraps and paper) for apartment dwellers or anywhere without the option to compost outside.

Cathy Nesbitt has taken a common recycling problem and turned it into green business by helping consumers compost their organic waste with the help of worms. Read on to learn all about this eco entrepreneur and some life lessons from a worm bin.

How do worms convert organic matter (food scraps and paper) into nature’s finest soil amendment known as castings?

Worms are going to play an ever-increasing role in waste management, soil production and therefore food security. Taking care of food scraps is one way we can all help mitigate climate change. Feed the soil, not the plant. Worms offer an incredible cross-curricular learning opportunity. Managing food waste is one way we can all help mitigate climate change.

Cathy is on a mission to put worms in every living space. Indoor composting with worms. She believes that worms are going to play an ever increasing role in waste management, soil production and therefore food security. It is essential that we learn how. Managing our food waste is a simple way that we can mitigate climate change and create ‘black gold’ to grow more delicious, nutritious food. The solution to the garbage crisis is several solutions, one of which is vermicomposting. Cathy’s Crawly Composters is a multi award winning organization recognized with several environmental and business awards. We conduct inspirational workshops and worm birthday parties. Worms provide a tremendous cross-curricular learning opportunity in the classroom. Over 75,000 students have seen our presentation, so far. On-site solutions to manage organic matter.

Cathy’s working title is Cathy Crawly Laughing Bean Queen

Simple solutions for some of today’s challenges. Worms for amending the soil, sprouts for eating (grow your own) and laughter for overall health and wellness.

Laughter yoga came to her at a time when she was struggling with all the negative energy folks were sending her way about this important mission. You can imagine that not everyone wants to have worms in the house. Daily laughter is now a huge part of her health plan.

Laughter is a great connector. It oxygenates our beautiful body. Laughter is a wonderful form of self love. Laughter is the best medicine. Have you had your daily D.O.S.E.? (Dopamine, Oxytocin, Serotonin, Endorphins) – The love drugs vs Cortisol and Adrenaline when stressed.

What inspired the start of this green business?

There was a piece in a local newspaper asking; “Are you a woman? Do you have a business idea?” It was an advertisement for a six month business course. After an injury at work as a freelance behavioural management specialist, (Freelance means without benefits) She was thinking about this worm business, but did not know how to start. Taking a business course offered the perfect opportunity. She said to her husband and said, “I’m quitting my job, taking this course and starting a worm business”. And that’s what she did.

What’s a day in the life of a Worm Advocate?
Like backyard composting, worm composting requires a carbon to nitrogen mix. To provide the required materials, we collect food scraps from local restaurants and grocery stores and shredded paper from offices. It is then processed and fed to the worms. Some days will involve harvesting. This means separating the worms from the compost. The castings are then dried, screened and packaged for sale.

Monday is a busy day of the week. This is our picking, packing, shipping day. Orders are prepared for delivery.

Education is a key component of our business to create awareness about the benefits of using worms to convert organic matter into nature’s finest fertilizer. Some of our time is spent presenting worm workshops for schools and community groups.

How do you promote your business?

We chose media as our marketing strategy. We have attracted over 500 print articles, several television and radios appearances as well as a documentary about our business called “Squirm, The Story of Cathy’s Crawly Composters.” We also attend monthly business networking events to promote the business. Since March 2020 Cathy has been travelling around the world via podcast as a guest expert over 250 shows so far!

Cathy co-founded and was Chair of a business networking organization called Green Connections Network. (2009-2022) Green-Connections was a networking and mentoring group of small businesses dedicated to exploring and sharing environmentally-friendly practices, products and ideas. The goal was to encourage all businesses to “go green” and live more sustainably.

What mistakes have you made along the way as an entrepreneur? What advice would you give others starting a sustainable business?

To raise awareness about our business, we exhibited at every show that was remotely connected to the environment. We spent a lot of money and time at events that did not provide the returns we were seeking. We discovered that worms are not an impulse buy (seems obvious when you think about it). Money is often limited at the beginning of a new business venture. When considering if an event is suitable for your business, attend first before deciding to exhibit. This will provide the opportunity to find out if the event attracts your target market, you can get the feel for the show, etc.

Laughter Yoga Wellness Program

Laughter Yoga is a simple concept that combines deep breathing exercises with gentle movements and laughter. Started in 1995 by a medical doctor, Dr. Madan Kataria. It is a cardiovascular activity that promotes feelings of wellbeing while decreasing stress. Laughter Yoga is a unique exercise routine which combines unconditional laughter with yogic breathing (Pranayama).

Science has proved that the body cannot differentiate between real and simulated laughter. Laughter Yoga is the only technique that allows adults to achieve sustained hearty laughter without involving cognitive thought. It bypasses the intellectual systems that may hinder natural laughter.

With Laughter Yoga:

§ We can laugh without jokes or comedy

§ We can laugh even when not happy or in a good mood

§ We can train our body and mind to laugh, Develop a Laughter Muscle

§ It’s about cultivating childlike playfulness

How does a Laughter Yoga session work?
Laughter Yoga sessions are typically 30-60 minutes. They start with easy warm-up techniques which include stretching, chanting, clapping and gentle movement. These help breakdown inhibitions and develop feelings of childlike playfulness. Breathing exercises are used to prepare the lungs for laughter followed by a series of “laughter exercises” that combine the method of acting and visualization techniques with playfulness. Breathing exercises from yoga are interspersed through the session.

It is scientifically proven that 10-15 minutes of sustained laughter is sufficient to develop full physiological benefits. A Laughter Yoga session may finish with “Laughter Meditation” which is a session of unstructured laughter whereby participants sit or lie down and allow natural laughter to flow from within like a fountain. This is a powerful experience that often leads to a healthy emotional catharsis and also a feeling of release and joyfulness that can last for days.

Laughter yoga is intentional laughter exercises designed to help us feel good. The more we laugh, the better we feel. Laughter is the best medicine. Have you had your daily D.O.S.E.? (dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, endorphins)

Regular laughter yoga sessions are recommended for maximum benefit.

Come experience the magic of laughter for the health of it.

Cathy Nesbitt worked for 20 years as a secretary, the last 10 with Kelly Temporary. She graduated in 2000 from York University with a BA in psychology after 15 years of night school. She came home from work one day and saw an ad in The Era Banner that read “Are you a woman? The first time I met Cathy was at the Universal Womens Network Annual Women of Inspiration Awards Gala. I was in absolute wonder as I heard her name being called for the “Advocate & Catalyst of Change” Award. Listening to her passion for protecting the environment greatly inspired me to reach out and learn more about her journey in creating Cathy’s Crawly Composters.

WHERE DID INSPIRATION SPARK?
“It all started when the Toronto landfill closed in 2002 and we started to export our garbage. There were more than 6 million people in the Greater Toronto Area and all our garbage was headed to Michigan”

Cathy started out without much entrepreneurial experience or a strong business background. Her career at the time was a secretary, where she built various skills such as keyboarding, organization, communication which eventually came along with her as she started her own venture.

Later, Cathy got a psychology degree where she focused her time on learning about human behaviour. This is where a life-long love of learning sprouted. To Cathy, it was the learning that made the experience happen. Later, as she entered the industry, Cathy was employed at a group home working with challenged adults. During this experience she developed some of the most meaningful connections in her life.

Much later in life after going through various occupation changes, Cathy figured out where she can captivate her curiousity about why people struggle to build composting habits. Cathy nurtured her own composting and gardening hobby which lead to her realizing that she could turn her passion into a business and one that would serve a great cause for the planet: Cathy’s Crawly Composters.

My mission was to put worms in every living space, every house, every classroom, every business, so there was no reason for transporting organic waste.

WHAT ARE SOME CHALLENGES YOU’VE BEEN THROUGH?
From starting a business to speaking to hundreds of people, Cathy has faced many challenges along the way. However, some of her biggest challenges were to do with people’s inclination towards worms, and the structure of her composting business itself.

“Choosing a business without repeat customers”

From Cathy’s journey of learning how to make, and run a business, one of her greatest suggestions would be structuring a business with repeating customers. Worms are pretty self-sustaining if taken care of, and are not a huge maintenance struggle to keep alive. They are also creatures that focus on the job, and fulfil their purpose of composting regardless of any external scenarios, so they were excellent at ensuring the soil was kept nourished and biotic.

“There was a lack of awareness of composting and the worms role in this industry”

A large portion of the struggles was the lack of knowledge present in the general public when it came to organic waste management. People did not understand how the worms could play a role in the house. Through this, Cathy came to understand that “without awareness, action is impossible”. Both knowledge and action are crucial factors for marketing and bringing a new concept to life.

“People have a fear of worms”

As Cathy has a degree in psychology, this idea of people’s fear of worms was one that she was curious about. Over time, she came to realize that it was key to help people overcome this fear and bring a sense of connection with her customers and the planet. Cathy spread the word of how worms run our underground system. They take our garbage and turn it into useful nutrient rich soil to grow more nutrient rich food. Taking care of our planet’s decomposers and nurturing their existence can have a great effect in improving the way we handle our garbage. Selling this concept and speaking about the impact worms and the decomposers has on our larger ecosystems helped propel her mission and business.

MAJOR TAKEAWAYS & LEARNINGS
Love what you do
One of the biggest takeaways Cathy has from her journey of personal growth as both an entrepreneur and an advocate is ensuring you are following your passion and truly enjoying the work you do because there will always be challenges that come your way. For Cathy, she was following her true passion and that allowed her to embrace any challenges and deal with them head-on!

Self-care is key: An intro to laughing
“If you’re day isn’t working, remove yourself from the situation you’re in and calm yourself. Maybe even laugh a bit!”

“Laughing sets me up for a successful day”. Laughing has become a huge part of Cathy’s life. Helping others laugh is now one of her main goals. Laughing is a natural solution for stress reduction. It helps fire up your neurons and allows you to consider new perspectives while reducing stress and other negative feelings. It’s a true symbol of optimism and positive vibes.

Try Earthing
“It literally grounds you” (pun intended)

Being barefoot and connected to Earth is something that Cathy has included as part of her daily life. Earthing is the process of reflecting and reconnecting with our soil and our planet. It is a process that allows us to bring a sense of inner peace and remember that we are just another being who has been gifted by Earth. Earthing followed by meditation is one of Cathy’s favorite activities.

ONE KEY PIECE OF ADVICE
“Have boundaries on how much time you spend on social media. You will be much happier and healthier if you limit negative energy inherent to online media.”

Social media and various other events happening around the world are influencing our lives and often take up too much mind space. Take time off or limit usage of social media to reconnect with hobbies you enjoy. This will fuel a sense of creativity that may have been lost amidst all the chaos. So be aware of the time you spend. Spend time to take care of your health; physical, mental well-being and spiritual.

EXTRA QS WITH CATHY NESBITT
Who is your favorite speaker?

Jane Goodall is one of the many speakers that I admire.

FINAL WORD
Over the years, Cathy has come a long way from transitioning into an environmental advocate and entrepreneur, while inspiring many to live a healthy and joyful life through her laughter classes and events. Being able to speak to someone that radiates such strong positivity and joyful vibes lifted my spirits up as well, and I hope young people out there can be inspired by Cathy’s passion and goals to make change in our world.
