New Blog Post! It's been a while! Not only have I evolved over the years, so has my name. In my elementary and high school years, I went by my nickname, Vicki. Then, my adult years began with me using my real name, Baljit. I've often struggled with identities tied to teach name, but after finally completing my LAST cancer surgery 4 weeks ago, just 3 days before my 44th birthday, I've been thinking a lot about these two parts of me and how they all tie back to my elementary to high school years at Mentor College / TEAM School. Thank you to Chris Starkey, Ian H***e, David Whyte and Mentor/TEAM Alumni. for delivering a warm welcome and helping me retrace my steps.
My Two Selves
A new movement wants to shift mainstream thinking away from medication and toward greater acceptance.
This is post breast cancer version of me. One where the sharp contours of my face have softened, thinner, finer hair, sparse eyelashes, uneven eyebrows, a body riddled with scars of past surgeries with more still to come, and physical changes resulting from various hormone glands no longer working.
I am proud of my journey but that joy is often overshadowed by the grief.
Thankfully through it all, I’ve had the unrelenting support of my loved ones. The spirit of women who encircle my scars and soften contours with love and authenticity. They remind me of our entwined journeys and reassure me that I’m never alone and can face the world with a renewed fervour. An eternity of gratitude to my loved ones.
My soul friends 💕 are made up of a diverse community of women in my life. These friendships have been an integral part of the rich tapestry of strength, compassion support that intertwine us all. We’ve grown and supported each other in personal and vocational endeavours.
This past weekend, my dear friend and clinical psychologist, Dr Noëlle Liwski Hanson, PhD, RPsych came for a visit while I’m back home in Toronto 🇨🇦. We had worked together in Edmonton and bonded over our shared passion for authentic, holistic patient care.
Cheers to my sisters!!

Talk about coming full circle ⭕️. I got to speak to the CCNM incoming class at their Unity Summit sporting my Unity Summit shirt!!
Cheers 🥂 to the strength of community. I tagged some of the people who signed the shirt, but there are so many more who make up the class of 2009. Please tag yourselves and/or provide your favourite memory or words of advice so that the incoming class can witness how amazing we continue to be as a community. Also, who still has their Unity Summit shirt?
Scars of healing, humility, tears, strength and laughter.

Vulnerability and healing are closely tied. Can one happen without the other? Living in my post cancer body, I’ve come to realize that these two themes, intricately woven, are key players in my continued healing journey.
Cancer changed so much of me and continues to do so. Lovingly accepting and celebrating my new self has been a challenge. I try to find images or stories of those who look like me and are rejoicing but have come up empty so far. Instead of searching, I’m now creating that story. I embrace every opportunity to express my vulnerability. It’s through that openness that I hope to move through my own healing and bring together a community of others who identify with this movement.
Thank you to for your project on body positivity. You’ve inspired me in many ways and I will forever appreciate your strength.

Our mental health has become an every important topic during the pandemic. Our mental health advocates and clinicians, like my friend and colleague, Dr Noëlle Liwski Hanson, PhD, RPsych are an incredibly important resource.
I recently had the opportunity to speak with EHealth Radio on the importance of mental health during COVID. Please use the link to access the interview.
These 3 month check-ups are always nerve wracking! Breathing in calm and exhaling anxiety.
I’m alive, I’m here and I’m strong.
I am a breast cancer thriver. However, thriving hasn’t been as straightforward as I had envisioned it would be. I’ve avoided looking at myself in the mirror, not worn the clothes I used to wear pre-cancer, and genuinely felt outside of myself. In efforts to connect with this different Baljit, I search for beauty.
2021 will be my quest for what beauty means to me. I will embody it, embrace it like a dear friend and express it enthusiastically at every opportunity.
What does beauty mean to you?
Thank you to two beautiful, strong and compassionate women whom I had the pleasure to speak with. and

I had always strived for the trifecta of being an ND, Researcher and Educator, now I also proudly wear the badge of ‘Cancer Thriver’ as well.
AANMC shared my story and I hope it inspires others to a career in Naturopathic Medicine.

“I am a recent breast cancer thriver.” Dr. Baljit K. Khamba had to be a patient and combine her ND training for optimum self-care.
Thank you for the reminder. Going through breast cancer and its many surgeries and treatments has left me in this new menopausal body. One that’s missing many parts which once define me as a woman. I’ve been working on creating a new definition that is ‘me’. One who is free of assumptions, pronouns and anger.
“Maintaining this pose and hearing the slow instrumental indian music in the background caused me to travel within myself and release layers of grief. I weep tears of sadness over remembering the difficult moments of the cancer journey. Then, as if the music had travelled on this path with me, the bansari switched from being mournful to moving to a more uplifting and hopeful tune. I felt a surge of strength surround me and remind me that I have been through tough times, but that I'm tougher. I am strong and brave! I felt a renewed tenacity in my current self."
