I had the joy of spending time with some of the incredible leaders behind the City of Brampton’s Black Empowerment Unit (BEU)—a first-of-its-kind municipal team working boldly to confront systemic anti-Black racism and uplift Black communities across the city.
To my left is and standing beside me with that radiant smile is Gwyneth Chapman, Supervisor of the BEU. Under Gwyneth’s leadership, the BEU has championed community-driven programming, amplified Black voices, and built bridges between City Hall and grassroots leaders. From youth empowerment to economic development, their work continues to shape a stronger, more equitable Brampton.
📌 As one of the only municipal teams of its kind in Canada, the BEU stands as a model for cities across the country. Their commitment to policy transformation, equity-centered partnerships, and Black community wellbeing is nothing short of inspiring.
It was an honour to gather, exchange, and dream about what’s possible when we centre healing, justice, and collective leadership.
📍Moments like this remind me: systems change begins with relationships. And I look forward to what we’ll co-create in the months to come.
