Every year, 4,000 Canadians die by su***de.
And behind every loss are loved ones left to griever—families, friends, coworkers, classmates, community members. The ripple effect reaches tens of thousands of lives.
But su***de is preventable. When people can find help, they can hold on to hope.
As a nurse, I’ve sat with people in crisis, when they’ve felt lost and alone and like help was out of reach.
As a researcher, I’ve spent my career closing that gap.
That’s why I’m proud to lead CAMH’s Digital Innovation Hub. It’s a space where clinicians, scientists and people with lived experience come together to design and scale digital tools that make mental health care more accessible and effect.
And it’s also why I’m proud to be part of an organization like CAMH, where innovation is making a real difference in su***de prevention with initiatives like:
• 9-8-8, Canada’s three-digit su***de prevention helpline, led by CAMH in partnership with the Government of Canada, providing free, evidence-based support 24/7 by call or text.
• The Hope app, a free tool that offers su***de prevention information, crisis resources, and personalized support in moments of need.
These are lifelines built on compassion, collaboration and science that help more people connect to care, when and where they need it.
September 10 is World Su***de Prevention Day. I hope you’ll take the opportunity to share these resources. You never know who might need a reminder that help and hope are always within reach.
