World Mental Health Day! 🌎

Today, we join people around the world in raising awareness, promoting education, and advocating for better mental health for all.

This year’s theme is “Access to Services: Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies” which highlights the urgent need to ensure everyone can access mental health care and community supports, especially in times of crisis such as natural disasters and conflict.

Access to mental health services isn’t just about treatment, it’s about connection, belonging, and having a supportive community.

A strong sense of community is essential to our well-being. It helps us thrive, and for those living with mental illness, it can make all the difference in easing feelings of loneliness and isolation.

At HOPE, our weekend drop-in programs provide many of the key elements that support mental wellness, including:
🌻 A sense of belonging by offering a place where you can be yourself and be appreciated for your unique qualities.
🌻 Genuine support from peers who understand and can walk alongside you through life’s challenges.

Together, we can help ensure that no one faces mental health challenges alone.
Let’s continue to build communities of care, compassion, and connection.
Not just today, but every day. 💚

Did you know that rolling a D20 could be one of the best things you do for your mental health? 🎲🐉Here at the clinic, we're harnessing the power of collaborative storytelling and heroic fantasy through a Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) campaign for adults every other Friday night! How does D&D contribute to mental health wellness? We are glad you asked!

▪Improving on Social Skills in a Safe Space: D&D is inherently a social game. It gives players a low-stakes environment to practice essential social skills like communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution. It can be incredibly helpful for those struggling with social anxiety or difficulty making connections.

▪Boosted Self-Confidence: Creating and embodying a character who overcomes challenges can be deeply empowering. When your character succeeds, you succeed. This can translate to a powerful boost in self-esteem and self-efficacy (the belief in your ability to succeed).

▪Emotional Expression and Exploration: Roleplaying allows you to explore difficult emotions, decisions, and scenarios from a safe distance. Want to see what it feels like to be decisive, assertive, or vulnerable? Your character is the perfect proxy for emotional exploration and understanding your own reactions.

▪Tackling Anxiety and Depression: D&D encourages mindfulness and focus on the current moment—the adventure at hand. The structure and collaborative nature of the game offer a distraction from ruminative thoughts, and the social connection can combat feelings of isolation that often accompany depression.

▪Creative Problem Solving: Every session throws new problems at the group, demanding creative thinking and collaboration. This practice in flexible thinking can improve your ability to approach real-life challenges with a more adaptable and resourceful mindset.

Ready to Join the Quest? You don't need any prior experience or equipment—just a willingness to embark on an adventure and we will help with the rest!

Today we are holding space in our minds and hearts to honour the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. We give pause to reflect on the great many Indigenous individuals, families and communities who continue to suffer from generational trauma and the lasting effects from the horrific residential school system.

Our Therapeutic Art Coach Nikki and her daughter paid the Woodland Cultural Centre a visit for the grand opening of the museum today, to learn more about their own Indigenous heritage. Around 15,000 children from 60 communities across Canada attended the residential school formerly known as the Mohawk Institute, or "Mush Hole" run by the Anglican Church and federal government from 1828 until 1970. Nikki's great grandmother was one of those children.

The visit was impactful, insightful and emotional. Please consider learning more about how you can support the incredible work they do at the Woodland Cultural Centre, or planning your own visit. 🧡
