We begin so grateful, without ever calling it so. We are born into the world filled with an innate sense of wonder and appreciation for all of Life – the rainbow and the ladybug, the wet kiss of a dog, the comfort of friendship… We feel our feelings fully, laughing ‘til we cry and crying ‘til we are exhausted, from the hardship of our discomfort or disappointment. We are born belonging. There is nothing we need to do, or say, or accomplish. We belong because we are -- An integral part of all there is…

And then we forget. This forgetting may be a slow, gradual amnesia born of conditional love, indoctrination, or conformity. Or it may be a sudden rupture – the trauma that obliterates our sense of safety and worth. Either way, it is our Fall from Eden – our separation from the wholeness that is our birthright. If this forgetting is somewhat inevitable, then perhaps this journey we call Life is about remembrance. As Ram Dass said, “we are all just walking each other Home”. This is the metaphor for every great story throughout history. The Odyssey, The Hobbit, Wizard of Oz and Gulliver’s Travels are all epics of homecoming, often after great adventure, perilous risk, and much uncertainty. Whilst the quest beyond is a necessary part of the story, the return home is its culmination and its triumph.

Both And

Life’s not neatly laid out, black and white.
No absolutes exist of what’s right or wrong
The dark has its place alongside the light
Within God’s embrace each thing doth belong

The deer grazes calmly in the woods without heed
While a cougar keenly hunts beneath twilit skies
A generous meal for the cougar to feed
Is, at once, for the deer, it’s untimely demise.

Each of you is separate within Time and Space
All alone to realize your pain and your strife
And you also belong in your own unique place
Amidst the miracle and mystery that we call Life

So tread humbly, dear one, whether elder or youth
May you not fall prey to ignorance and fear
Opinion and judgement are no proxy for Truth
Love welcomes equally All that is Here

On the day when
The weight deadens
On your shoulders
And you stumble,
May the clay dance
To balance you.

And when your eyes
Freeze behind
The gray window
And the ghost of loss
Gets into you,
May a flock of colors,
Indigo, red, green
And azure blue,
Come to awaken in you
A meadow of delight.

When the canvas frays
In the curragh of thought
And a stain of ocean
Blackens beneath you,
May there come across the waters
A path of yellow moonlight
To bring you safely home.

May the nourishment of the earth be yours,
May the clarity of light be yours,
May the fluency of the ocean be yours,
May the protection of the ancestors be yours.

And so may a slow
Wind work these words
Of love around you,
An invisible cloak
To mind your life.

Remembrance

In the depth of darkness,
the night doth forget the day
Vibrance and color concealed
‘neath cover of shade.

Wearied senescence
forgets innocence of youth
Limitless horizons, play of dreams,
and naivety of Truth

anguished soul, disquieted mind,
forgets the whispers of God
Beauty, disgust, blessing and challenge
all That which is to be awed

Darkness and light dance as two lovers,
youth and old age both vantages of Time
Forgetfulness begets, remembrance forgets –
a swirling current flows to Ocean Divine
