The "Ice Cube" Trick (Vagus Nerve Hack)

When your heart is racing or you’re feeling "stuck" in a stress loop, reach for an ice cube. Holding something freezing cold or splashing ice water on your face triggers the "mammalian dive reflex." It forces your heart rate to drop and pulls you out of a panic response.
It sounds simple, but it’s science.

🙏🏼Thank you to those who attended our wonderful Breath work Session with Ray Lugo this week.
Here are some extra tools and tricks that you might consider trying to keep that good breath work going💨

Between looking out for our families, managing our homes, and navigating our digital lives, it’s easy to live in "shallow breathing" mode. We’re often so busy taking care of everyone else that our own nervous systems are stuck on high alert.

Breath work isn’t just a wellness trend; it’s a way to tell your body, "You are safe, you are grounded, and you are in control." Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed by a long to-do list or just need a moment of peace before bed, here are 3 tools to help you find your exhale:

1. The "Exhale Longer" Rule 🌬️
The simplest trick to calm your heart rate is to make your exhale twice as long as your inhale. Try breathing in for a count of 4 and breathing out for a count of 8. This sends an immediate signal to your brain to move out of "stress mode" and into "rest mode."

2. Insight Timer (Free App) 📱
While many apps charge a subscription, Insight Timer has a massive library of free guided breathing exercises specifically for women. Look for "Yoga Nidra" or "Coherent Breathing" sessions—they are wonderful for calming the mind before sleep.

3. The "Five Senses" Grounding 🖐️
If you feel your anxiety rising while scrolling online or dealing with a stressful task:

Stop.

Take a deep breath.

Acknowledge 5 things you can see, 4 you can touch, 3 you can hear, 2 you can smell, and 1 you can taste.

Finish with one more deep, intentional breath.

Spring isn't a life reset.-but it does make things feel a little more doable.🌱

The days are longer. The air's better. You're not fighting the dark at 4:30 anymore. That counts for something!

If you've been feeling stuck or just running on empty, you don't need a full overhaul. Just take the small wins.
*open the windows and let the fresh air in
*step outside, even if it's just around the block
*clear one small space that you've been struggling with
*start something that you’ve been putting off (keep it low pressure)

It's not about changing everything-it's about feeling lighter where you can. And honestly, sometimes that's all it takes to get a little momentum back!🦋

There are days I feel completely lost.
Days that start with clarity…
And somewhere along the way, I lose my footing.
I map out my plans.
Write down my dreams.
Convince myself this is the day I get it all right.
And then life shows up…
And flips everything upside down.
Suddenly I’m overwhelmed.
Frustrated.
Standing there wondering how it all unraveled so fast.
Sometimes it hits hard enough to bring tears.
That’s when I stop.
Breathe.
Pull myself back from the edge of the chaos.
Because I’m learning something…
Not every detour is a disaster.
Not every mistake deserves to ruin my day.
I’m stronger than that.
Even when I don’t feel like it.
Even when everything feels heavy at once.
I remind myself… this isn’t the end.
It’s just part of the journey.
And I don’t measure my worth by the moments I stumble.
I measure it by the way I rise.
Again.
And again.
And again.
I’m becoming someone…
Someone stronger.
Someone wiser.
Someone who keeps going even when it’s hard.
Change isn’t easy.
It never is.
But it’s worth it.
And I’ve learned I can be both…
A masterpiece in progress
And a complete mess
All at the same time.
That doesn’t make me broken.
That makes me real.
So I keep showing up.
With whatever strength I can find that day.
With a heart that still believes there’s more ahead.
Because even when life doesn’t go the way I planned…
It still takes me where I’m meant to be.
I just have to be willing to see it.
To learn from it.
To grow through it.
So I’m done focusing on everything that goes wrong.
I’m choosing to see what’s right.
Even if it’s small.
Even if it’s just the fact that I got back up.
There will be hard days.
Days that make me want to hide.
Cry.
Give up for a moment.
But I won’t stay there.
I never do.
Because little by little…
Step by step…
I’m getting closer to her.
The woman I’ve been fighting to become.
And one day…
I’ll look in the mirror and smile.
Not because everything was perfect…
But because I didn’t quit.
Because I made it through.
Because I became her.
And that day?
That’s going to mean everything.
I’m on my way.
