🌟 Happy National Occupational Therapy Month! 🌟

Occupational therapy helps children build motor skills, improve coordination, manage sensory needs, and gain independence in daily activities. 🪁❤️

We’re so excited to welcome and celebrate our new pediatric OT, Kristie! She brings a lot of fun, hands-on therapy that supports growth and confidence. 🌱💪

Our team is growing once again! Emily has already been such a wonderful part of ATS as a volunteer, and we’re delighted that she’ll now be stepping into the role of Inclusive Communication Assistant! 🥳

Here's a bit more about her:

Emily is a fifth year student at the University of British Columbia, majoring in Speech Sciences. Throughout her studies she has discovered a passion for language acquisition, phonology and early childhood education practices.

She has experience teaching parent and tot classes as well as organizing and leading day camp activities for young children and youth in the community.

Emily is excited to pursue a career in speech language pathology and values creating inclusive spaces that support every client throughout their speech journey. She is looking forward to contributing to the community and team while receiving mentorship from experienced clinicians. Emily enjoys spending her free time baking or getting outdoors.

🍂 It’s IEP season!

Between October and early November, many schools hold their annual IEP (Individualized Education Plan) meetings to review your child’s goals and supports.

If your child also receives private services (like speech or OT), this is a great time to connect both teams. When school and home work together, it helps ensure consistency and a shared understanding of your child’s strengths and needs.

If you’d like your SLP to attend and share input, please reach out soon - this is one of the busiest times of the year for us!

💙 Our team is growing! We’re so excited to introduce Kristie, who will be providing Occupational Therapy for our ATS families.

Here's a bit about her:

Kristie earned her Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Therapy in Taiwan in 2007. She has worked in a variety of settings, supporting children with diverse developmental profiles, including Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, Developmental Delays, Cerebral Palsy, and Developmental Coordination Disorder.

She is certified in DIR/Floortime 101 and Learning Without Tears: Readiness & Writing for Pre-K, and remains committed to ongoing professional development. Kristie takes a neurodiversity-affirming, child-centered approach, building therapy around each child’s strengths, needs, and routines. She values strong family relationships and aims to make therapy meaningful and enjoyable, supporting children’s growth in independence, confidence, and daily participation.

She is fluent in English and Mandarin.

✨ Tip Tuesday: Model, Don’t Correct! ✨

Instead of directly correcting your child’s speech, try modeling the correct way to say the word or phrase.

This encourages learning through natural repetition and positive reinforcement, making practice feel fun and supportive! 💬👍

For our Milestone Monday, we have… Turn-taking!

Turn-taking is one of the fundamental building blocks of communication! 🧩

✨ A simple way to foster this skill is by pausing during interactions.

This gives children a chance to process and respond, building their confidence in communication. 💭🎤

Try it out by pausing for a moment after you speak, and watch as they start to fill in the gaps!
