There are three main types of hearing loss, and understanding the difference can help you take the right steps toward better hearing health.
1. Conductive Hearing Loss
This happens when sound cannot travel efficiently through the outer or middle ear. It may be caused by earwax, fluid, infections, or issues with the eardrum or middle-ear bones. Conductive loss is often treatable.
2. Sensorineural Hearing Loss
This is the most common type and occurs when there is damage to the inner ear or hearing nerve. It can be caused by aging, noise exposure, or genetics. Sensorineural loss is typically permanent but can be managed effectively with hearing aids.
3. Mixed Hearing Loss
This is a combination of conductive and sensorineural components. Treatment may involve a mix of medical care and amplification support.
If you are unsure which type of hearing loss you may be experiencing, a hearing assessment can help guide you toward the right solution.
