"How do I know if my client is right for psychedelic-assisted therapy?"
One of the most common questions we get from CoCare therapists is about client selection. Not every client is appropriate for psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT), and knowing how to assess suitability is crucial for both safety and outcomes.
Key assessment areas we evaluate:
Medical screening:
→ Cardiovascular health
→ Current medications and potential interactions
→ History of psychosis or bipolar disorder
→ Seizure disorders or brain injuries
Psychological readiness:
→ Ability to tolerate intense emotions
→ Sufficient ego strength for altered states
→ Motivation and realistic expectations
→ Support system availability
Treatment history:
→ Evidence of treatment resistance
→ Previous therapy engagement
→ Trauma processing readiness
→ Integration capacity
What PAT treatment assessment includes:
→ Comprehensive discovery call with a prescriber
→ Care plan review
→ Physical assessment with a nurse
→ Medical clearance from our physicians
→ Collaborative discussion between you, our team, and the client
Here's your role as the referring therapist: You know your client better than anyone. Your insights about their emotional regulation, trauma history, and readiness for intensive work are invaluable to our assessment process. Together, your insights and our medical guidance create a collaborative care process designed for the client’s highest good.
Remember: Not being ready now doesn't mean never. Some clients need more preparation, stabilization, or traditional therapy before PAT becomes an appropriate option.
Only clients who are truly suitable candidates move forward, which protects everyone and optimizes outcomes.
The conversation starts with understanding their unique situation.
