A FRIENDLY DENTAL REMINDER 🦷
Sometimes the signs of needing dental work aren’t as obvious as we’d expect, especially if we’re riding consistently, the changes can be so gradual we don’t notice until it’s overdue.
Here are some reasons for regular dental work/check-ups:
✅ TMJ- Unbalanced teeth will cause extra pressure and stress on their Temporomandibular Joint.
✅ Head Carriage- I’m not talking about putting their head in a frame, I mean whether you’re asking the horse to move forward onto the bit or bend either left or right, their jaw needs to be able to move. High points, hooks, etc. will restrict movement of the jaw, making things like bending very uncomfortable, and sometimes simply not possible.
✅ Potential lacerations and ulcers- sharp points can cause lacerations and ulcers in the cheeks and tongue, which are painful and can lead to abscesses if it gets infected.
✅ Weight Loss- More severe imbalances, an infection or a broken tooth can cause pain and difficulty chewing. Which may result in dropping food and/or decreased appetite.
These are just a few, there are several more reasons dental work should not be overlooked.
