A cause very near and dear to my heart. On May 4th my family and I will be participating again in Hike for Hospice in memory of my brother. In my brother’s memory and as a thank you to Hospice Calgary for the loving support that they provided for him (and us), I would like to try to raise as many funds as we are able to. Please donate to this worthy cause.

When you came out I was really upset that you weren’t put on my chest right away. Because of your heart rate they wanted to make sure you were ok. You didn’t cry for a little over a minute so they were worried about that… but I wasn’t. I knew you would be perfect and you were. The nurse placed you on my chest and I fell instantly in love. You had a bit of a cone head from being stuck but other than that you were amazing. You were 9 lbs 9 oz born on March 9th at 7:27pm and the 9th grandchild : ). 9 is such a powerful number and is so fitting for you. 9 represents the end of a cycle, it represents completion and it represents fulfillment. You complete our family and I am so glad I trusted my gut feeling in bringing you into the world. Your dad and I could not decide on a name for you for a week! Nothing seemed fitting until grandpa suggested Wyatt. That was it! I liked the name Lawson so you are Wyatt Lawson Strome-Sweett : )

Your dad and Megan followed us to the hospital and met us in the delivery room. At that point care had been transferred over to an OB and we were waiting for him to come and check me. It was just after 7pm. When he came in and checked me he saw that you needed some help getting out. He told me that there was no time for an epidural and that he would have to give me a local anesthetic. With the next contraction I remember involuntarily pushing down on my belly and you started to come out! Later I would find out that the OB turned around to prepare the massive needle and when he turned back to poke me with it your head appeared and you were ready to go! With a few pushes you were out!

I believe this went on for about 15 mins and before I knew it Chelsea and Paige were telling me that they had called an ambulance and I had to be transferred to the hospital to vacuum you out. This was around 6:40pm. I was blissfully unaware about the seriousness of the situation, I just said ok and tossed a dress on. The ambulance arrived quickly and I floated down the stairs between contractions. I remember everyone being so impressed with how well I made it down the stairs, haha! While the EMS guys were getting the stretcher Paige continued to check your heart rate and it was coming back up, which was great news! In the background auntie Kathryn was there looking after the kids and everyone was really worried. The kids saw the ambulance and said they were scared, but I wasn’t. I knew we would be ok. I remember one of the EMS guys had this crazy handlebar moustache and kept asking about how dilated I was and we all laughed about it. I think he was nervous that I was going to have you in the back of the ambulance, haha! While I was waiting to go into labour I watched A LOT of Grey’s Anatomy so getting on that stretcher and riding to the hospital with the sirens blaring was awesome! The contractions in the ambulance were not awesome though! Ohhh those hurt! You were a big boy and were stuck in my pelvis trying to push through with each contraction.

I started out on the bed but Paige couldn’t get a good feel for you so we set up on the floor. I was in the zone and with each contraction I pushed as hard as I could but nothing was happening. Auntie Kathryn said that Chelsea and Paige both had their entire hands in my va**na, haha! I was working so hard to get you past my pelvis but little did I know that with each contraction your heart rate was dropping down to about 70bpm and it wasn’t really coming back up.

Everyone was surrounding me with so much love and support and Nash and Ivy wanted to get in there with gloves, haha! I remember Nash caressing my cheek and saying how proud he was of me and that he loved me. You have some pretty amazing siblings that love you so incredibly much.

There was a bit of a lip left on my cervix so I had to go sit reverse on the toilet so it would lift. Oh boy was that intense! At that point Megan put down her camera and came into the bathroom with me to support me and I was so grateful! She put pressure on my hips and eased the pain. After doing that for a while Paige checked me again and it was time to push.

At 4:03 pm she headed to her car to grab her bags and as she was coming in the door I shouted down, “Paige! My water just broke!” I had never felt my water break on its own before and it was like I peed my pants and it just kept coming! I was on the exercise ball when it happened and it felt like an elbow swiping me and an elastic band snapping. I loved that things were progressing naturally and I didn’t have to have any interventions other than the castor oil. After I wiped up the amniotic fluid all over the floor and changed my pants, I messaged Megan to think about coming over. She was going to take pictures of your birth, just like she did with Nash’s. Contractions were picking up so I hopped in the bath. Your sisters and brother were so supportive, I loved having them around to experience this. Isla was the most interested and involved. She took care of me by feeding me ice cubes and she and Ivy fanned me with a book…contractions were getting pretty intense and I was sweating!

Paige tried to check my progress in the bath but it wasn’t a great angle so I had to get out of the bath. Isla was waiting for me with a towel. She took good care of us : ). I was in active labour at this point when I got on the bed so contractions were coming more frequently.

Your due date was February 23rd and everyone around me was saying, “you’ll be early! This is your 4th and you’re so big!” Little did they know you had other plans! Paige was our midwife again and I was so excited since Nash’s birth was so amazing. The only problem was she was going to be away in Mexico from March 1st to March 8th ! I had to make a decision to try and get you out before March 1st, risk not having Paige there while she was away or wait until she was back. Well…we took the risk and you were very happy to hang out on the inside for as long as possible! I wanted to let you do your thing and wait until you were ready but I was worried that if we waited any longer you would be 13 pounds so when Paige was home on March 9th we decided to induce using castor oil. The first dose of castor oil did nothing but clean me out! I really didn’t want to take a second dose so I messaged Megan to see what she thought. She told me I didn’t have to take the second dose, so I went with that!

Contractions started picking up around 1:30pm but tapered off. Paige told me to put on the breast pump to get them going again and that did the trick! All the kids were with me in my room watching Harry Potter as I bounced on the exercise ball and breathed through the contractions. I remember thinking and saying out loud, “oh this isn’t so bad!” I let Paige know things were picking up so she dropped her kids off with her parents and made her way over. She came in with a glowing tan from Mexico and a beautiful set of gel nails that would soon be cut down to nubs. She tried to keep them as long as she could though, haha! Paige asked if I wanted to break my water like we did last time to get things going and I agreed.

This sweet baby turned one last week and I am thrilled to finally share his birth story. Sweet baby Wyatt, here is your birth story in the words of your mama:

For a few years before you were conceived I would often get a feeling like something was missing in my life. In 2022 I did a lot of work on myself with Erica Andries. We did a lot of reiki and massage and something kept coming up, like there was a lingering soul ready to come through. I started looking after peoples animals and we got a snake and a gecko…I even fostered 2 dogs! But that wasn’t what I needed. While I was fostering the last dog I kept getting a feeling like I really wanted another baby. I told your dad lets try for a baby this summer and if it happens it was meant to be and if it doesn’t, then it wasn’t. Well it happened immediately and on June 3rd 2023 you were conceived! I found out on Father’s Day and your dad and I were so happy. Now to tell the rest of the family! 4 kids, that’s crazy! I was more nauseas with you than your brother and sisters and I had round ligament pain at the end. This was probably because you were so huge! Other than that it was a joy to carry you.
