Without a doubt, a cancer diagnosis can have a huge effect on mental health.

This is why we incorporate customized mental health support into EVERY patient’s Care Plan; and while the support tends to look different for each patient, it often involves:

🧑‍⚕️ A referral to a Psychologist or Psychotherapist with experience working with patients who are undergoing cancer care.

🧘 Recommendations for stress mitigation techniques, such as exercise, homecare, mindfulness-based stress reduction techniques, guided and unguided meditation techniques, supplements and/or nutrient changes, and medications (if necessary).

🧠 Specialty referrals for different types of programs, including Neurofeedback, which can actually change the cognitive functioning of your brain to process and regulate emotional experiences more effectively.

The good news is that we have access to a broad array of tools we can utilize and tailor to YOUR specific needs.

Because after all, you are SO much more than just a cancer diagnosis 💙

When it comes to mental health during cancer care, we refuse to take a one-size-fits-all approach 🙅

While conventional oncology is very good at treating the tumour itself (which, of course, is a crucial part of cancer treatment!), it tends to fail patients in other important areas, including:

⏳ Not giving patients enough TIME with their practitioners in order to fully communicate what they’re going through, especially when it comes to their mental and emotional needs.

So, what do we do differently? 👀⬇️

When you work with us, we strive to get a detailed understanding of:

🔹 Both your physical ailments AND how you’re feeling

🔹 How you’re doing with treatment side effects

🔹 How the disease is affecting your mental health

🔹 How the disease is affecting your relationships with your family and friends

We then design protocols to specifically address those concerns to make sure that you’re supported in EVERY aspect of your health.

Are you searching for a more holistic approach to cancer care?

What is Peripheral Neuropathy?

Are you or a loved one undergoing chemotherapy?

If so, you should know about a side effect called Peripheral Neuropathy ⬇️

Peripheral neuropathy is a common side effect of chemo and other targeted therapies that’s caused by inflammation and damage to the peripheral, or non-central, nerves in the body. It often shows up in the fingers and hands, as well as the feet and tips of toes, and can even cause permanent damage if it isn’t treated.

As patients go through chemotherapy, they may start to notice that sensations feel different on their fingertips or the tips of their toes. It can feel like numbness, tingling, or irritation.

The most important thing for you to know is: You do NOT have just to sit back and wait for peripheral neuropathy to get worse 🙅‍♂️

We have well-researched, effective therapies that can:

1️⃣ Prevent it from happening in the first place, and

2️⃣ Effectively treat existing Peripheral Neuropathy

If you or someone you love could benefit from Peripheral Neuropathy treatment, please don’t hesitate to contact us today 💙

What’s one thing we do for each of our oncology patients here at Neurvana Naturopathic Medicine?

Micronutrient testing 🧪✨

It allows us to get the precise information we need to make very specific recommendations for each patient, which they can then use to optimize their immune system function.

Micronutrient testing typically involves a blood test to look for deficiencies or depletions in various different types of nutrients such as:

🔹 B vitamins

🔹 Vitamin C

🔹 Fat-soluble nutrients such as Vitamins A, D, E, and K

🔹 Amino acid and fatty acid concentrations

🔹 Various other micronutrients and minerals that are essential for cellular repair, immune system function, and inflammation regulation.

Why is this important? 🧐

The cancer itself - as well as many conventional cancer treatments - can often cause severe depletions of essential nutrients; and when these levels are low, your body’s healing capabilities can become significantly impaired.

If you don’t have enough of those building blocks to stimulate repair and create necessary molecules, you may end up with faulty repair mechanisms and a lot of damage that can go unchecked 🔨

Are you or a loved one undergoing cancer treatment?

Let’s talk about cancer treatment-related mouth sores ⬇️

Also called oral mucositis, cancer treatment-related mouth sores, are an inflammatory reaction to several different types of conventional cancer treatments, including:

🔹 Chemotherapy agents

🔹 Targeted drugs

🔹 Localized radiation anywhere in the head and neck

Essentially, these treatments cause irritation and inflammation in the mucus membranes inside the mouth. Most patients describe them first as irritation and pain with swallowing food or liquids, and then later as open sores on the insides of their gums and oral cavity.

Needless to say, oral mucositis can cause significant irritation and pain while eating and drinking 😣

Please remember this, however: you DON’T have to wait until your cancer treatment is over to address these mouth sores 🗣

There are some very effective treatments we can use to not only reduce the severity of mouth sores but completely eliminate them - including therapies that can prevent them from happening in the first place.

Don’t suffer needlessly 💙

When it comes to cancer care, nutrition MATTERS 🗣

Not only does it matter when it comes to survival rates, but it also plays a considerable role in one’s quality of life throughout cancer treatment.

Research has shown that individuals who follow a more Mediterranean, plant-based diet experience a drastic improvement in both quality of life and in their chances of reaching long-term remission.

This is compared to individuals who are consuming a Standard American Diet, which involves high carbohydrate intake, high meat intake, and low fiber intake 🍔🍟

So, what is the Mediterranean Diet? 👀⬇️

It’s a style of eating based on the traditions of Italy, Greece, and other countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. It consists of:

🥗 Plant-based foods, such as whole grains, vegetables, legumes, fruits, nuts, and seeds
🐟 Moderate amounts of seafood
🌰 Healthy fats, such as nuts and olive oil
🚫 Very low amounts of dairy and red meat

These findings allow us to design an effective nutrition intervention to improve our patients’ quality of life AND help them reach their goals of long-term remission.

You’ll never walk away from us wondering: “What more can I do?”

With Integrative Cancer Care, we cover all the bases 💙

What Does Neurofeedback do?

What is Neurofeedback and how can it help during cancer treatment?

Let’s talk about that 👀⬇️

Neurofeedback is a form of biofeedback therapy that can improve many cancer-related issues.

By using electrodes and sensors to measure brain waves, communication patterns, and signaling, we’re able to see what’s happening between different types of networks inside your central nervous system - all in real time 🧠

We can then use this information to compare it to different databases and understand which types of patterns are associated with poor or suboptimal functioning.

Then, through visual feedback, we can retrain the brain to rewire how it communicates with its different networks ⚡️

Even when used short-term throughout cancer treatment, Neurofeedback can significantly help with many of the mental health changes that come along with cancer treatment, including:

🔹 Fatigue
🔹 Brain fog
🔹 Focus
🔹 Attention span
🔹 Short-term/long-term memory issues
🔹 Cognitive fatigue and feeling “run down”
🔹 Anxiety
🔹 Depression

Are you ready to treat cognitive issues at their source? 🧠✨

Do you feel rushed through the conventional medical system? 🤔

Are you often left without answers, forcing you to try and w**d through the endless information online? 😣

Unfortunately, this happens all too often. While most practitioners have the best of intentions, traditional medicine tends to take a one-size-fits-all approach to treatment. As a result, patients feel unheard and are left to suffer through unwanted symptoms.

At Neurvana Naturopathic Medicine, we take a radically different approach called Integrative Care 🌱✨

Integrative Care allows us to approach treatment through a holistic lens. We look at:

🧘 Lifestyle
🧠 Mental health
🥑 Diet

AND we work to make sure you’re getting the emotional support you need.

We then use this information to create an individualized care plan tailored to your unique symptoms, values, and ultimate health goals 💪🏼

With us, you’ll never just be a diagnosis 💙

❔Are you or a loved one dealing with the debilitating side effects of conventional cancer treatments?❔

Undergoing chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and targeted immunotherapies can be a long and challenging fight. While these treatments can be extremely effective at killing cancer cells, they can cause damage to other parts of our body, as well.

Not only are these side effects downright painful, but they can become so severe that the patient may be forced to stop an effective treatment altogether 😞

🚨 This is why you need to know about Low-level Laser therapy 🚨

Low-level Laser Therapy (also known as cold laser therapy) uses wavelengths of red and infrared light to stimulate cellular healing inside of the treated tissue. It has proven to be extremely effective at managing negative side effects such as:

✔️ Peripheral Neuropathy (nerve damage from chemotherapy)
✔️ Lymphedema (fluid build-up and swelling)
✔️ Radiation-induced burns
✔️ Mucositis (mouth sores, inflammation, and dryness)

Not only that, but Low-level Laser Therapy is safe, painless, and it won’t interact with any medications 🙅

Yes, it is absolutely possible to minimize (and even eliminate) these horrible side effects WITHOUT interrupting your cancer treatment 💙

“My husband has been seeing Dr. Ryan Best for the last two years ever since he was diagnosed with cancer. It has been nothing but a fantastic experience in every way. My husband is cancer free and I know it has been because of Dr. Ryan's great care. Dr. Ryan has treated us with the utmost respect and is so knowledgeable that we learn something new every time we visit. I also recently took another family member in to see Dr. Ryan as she was dealing with depression and anxiety. He gave her some tools to use right away and she is already seeing some improvement. I would highly recommend Dr. Ryan to anyone who is looking for a very conscientious and highly ethical Naturopath, Dr. Ryan is the person to see!” - Pia Giltner
I want to send my heartfelt thanks to Pia for providing this amazing feedback - and to all my patients I work with every day. They give me the motivation I need to continuously educate myself and provide excellent care each day.

Did you know that Mistletoe can help alleviate cancer-related symptoms?

Yes, THAT Mistletoe 🎄

It’s actually been used in cancer care for the last 50 years and has just recently made its way to North America.

You see, Mistletoe contains a molecule called “Mistletoe lectins”, which can help with a variety of quality-of-life issues for cancer patients. In fact, it can help with nearly ALL of the side effects that come with conventional therapies, such as chemo and radiation. Specifically,

🔸 Fatigue
🔸 Nausea
🔸 Digestive issues
🔸 Pain
🔸 Depression and anxiety

Many times, Mistletoe therapy can actually be the reason why a patient is able to continue their cancer treatment - not to mention restore their quality of life as they undergo these harsh therapies.
